Damn that's a cheap PC for all what ya get

I was looking through some retail sites, checking out what PC's are out on the market right now. I'm considering buying a new computer before I get my new camera, and I came across this HP at Circuit City

Buy the HP Pavilion Media Center TV PC (M8120N) and other Desktop Computers at circuitcity.com

Here's a short list of specs

Intel Core 2 Quad Processor 2.40GHz
1066MHz Bus Speed
Level 2 Cache 2 x 4MB
3 Gigs of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) - Expandable to 8 Gigs
640GB 7200RPM
DVD Burner - Lightscribe
Built in Wireless
TV Turner
NVIDIAŽ GeForce™ 7350 LE graphics card and 623MB of video memory—128MB dedicated

All that for $1099.99

Not bad I think.

thats the fake quad core iirc.

any integraded video card (usually LE) are crap. steer clear. i have that same card on my pc at work and it cant handle Google Earth to save its life.

if i have time later tonight ill build you one that kills that for half the price.

Video Card is weak. It's a media center not a gamer. If you want to use it for what it's meant for then it's nice but try to play any new graphic intensive games on it and it will fall on its face.

I think that Hewlett-Packard gives you the most for what you pay for. I almost bought one.

Oh I bet the card sucks balls, it's a media center PC.

I'm going to get my next computer built piece by piece. The only things I want is a powerful gaming machine that's also water cooled.

why not just do that with one pc?

why buy one store-bought POS for 1000$ then start building a second "gaming only" PC for the same price? you can do everything you could on the "media center" pc on your gaming rig, and do it better. by which point you wont use the first store-bought PC anymore so its moot to begin with.

Re: Damn that's a cheap PC for all what ya get

I am going to do that with one PC.

A friend of mine is going to hit up Newegg for me and start listing me some items he could get me and start building it. I'm only a bit worried about the water cooling idea, I wouldn't want something inside to start leaking and ****.

You want to talk water cooling talk to Mark, he has done it a couple times. And I know what he will tell you... DON'T DO IT!

lol alright then, what would be a good compromise for it then? My computer runs hot in my room, I even got a bigger power supply and a few extra fans but it's still runs pretty hot.

Nate's right, I don't recommend watercooling for anybody. All you need is a big quality heatsink with a 120mm fan, a 120mm intake fan in the front, and a 120mm exhaust fan in the back.

obviously he is tryin to say that any pre-built pc usually blows. the only good ones are usually 2k+. build your own... and water cooling is dangerous. i personally only like to build decent gaming rigs every few years instead of paying double and getting something top of the line. i can deal with high graphics and a couple hundred dollars rather than very high graphics.

Re: Damn that's a cheap PC for all what ya get

It's not that it's dangerous as much as it's a pain in the ***. It makes everything at least twice as hard to work on. You've got to figure out how you're going to run all your tubing, measure, cut, plumb the tubing, and then leak test it. You can put together an air cooled gaming rig in almost no-time. Install Windows and a couple of games and be playing in a couple of hours, without any trouble at all. You can't even leak test a watercooled rig in that amount of time.

Re: Damn that's a cheap PC for all what ya get

^ That's why I was considering going back to Alienware because they have rigs already hooked up and water cooled.

BUT

I'm not going to spend as much money as I did on this computer on a new one.

$2200 on the tower and it did NOT come with a sound card, I purchased it separately.

I might wait until the DDR3 Ram comes out, along with MAYBE the Quad core or the Extreme Dual Core. I want this machine to last, and the only thing I wanna change out of it every once in a long while is it's video card.

Really I wouldn't waste time or money on water cooling. The benefits aren't worth the trouble imo. Just get a nice 50 dollar cpu fan and it will keep it plenty cool.

werd, unless you plan on overclocking or leaving WoW open all day to sell **** or whatever those games do, i wouldnt bother with WC.

im gonna WC my next build, but the CPU, GPU and ram will be clocked (im gonna get the neato ram with the water-cooled heat sinks)

as for DDR3 i dunno if i would wait. i dont think any motherboards support it yet. just get a decent amount of DDR2 and youll be golden for a few years in that department.

Re: Damn that's a cheap PC for all what ya get

Yeah I suppose so. That's a good point too about the processors not being compatible with the DDR3 and I'll have to wait on that, and it'll be expensive.

I hear ya', big spender.

The real question you need to ask yourself is, "Why do I want a watercooled rig?" Thomas, you need to ask yourself the same question. Watercooling the RAM is worthless, btw.

But if I don't need it water cooled, then I'll just hook a giant AC unit to it lol

werd, but im a pimp, and it would look dam sweet.

plus my next rig i plan on overclocking everything i can. didnt work to well with this setup, this 2.4 didnt like much over 2.7ghz and that didnt yield me any realistic gains, so i backed it down to stock. as for the ram, anytime i tried to do anything to the timing or whatnot the pc would not boot. i kinda gave up with clocking on this rig and kinda realized i didnt have to really, still plays most of the newest games on full, has some issues with Quake4 on its ultra-settings, but thats about it. i could probably get away with just running a second 7800gt-oc and finding the best Socket 939 processor and another gig of ram, but for a little more than half that amount, i could get a new board, about 2gigs of ddr2 and a way better socket am2 processor, and still run the 7800gtoc till its dead.

Sounds like pretty much what I am running now
