Street Racers Get Crushed

Hopefully this is not a repost, but I thought this was crazy, and a damn good idea

Cars crushed in street racing crackdown

By GREG RISLING, Associated Press Writer
Wed Jun 20, 6:52 PM ET

RIALTO, Calif. - Charles Hoang winced when the whoosh went out of the tires. Daniel Maldonado took pictures with a digital camera as glass exploded and rained down to the ground.

The cars the teens had so meticulously souped up and tricked out were crushed Wednesday as part of a crackdown on illegal street racing in Southern California.

"That's my heart, my dream," said Hoang, 18, of Chino, who was surrounded by friends as his 1998 Acura Integra was put into a compactor. "That's my girlfriend, the love of my life. The cops can crush my car, but they can't crush my memories."

Authorities destroyed six vehicles Wednesday at an auto graveyard, hoping would-be racers think again after looking at the mashed machines. Illegal street racing is responsible for or suspected in 13 deaths in Southern California since March.

The thrill-seeking, adrenaline-pumping activity is rampant in Riverside and San Bernardino counties east of Los Angeles where rows of tract homes line wide streets that attract racers.

Nearly 1,000 people drivers and spectators have been arrested for investigation of street racing activities over the past two years in San Bernardino County alone. Police need a court order to destroy the cars. They must prove that the serial or identification numbers on a vehicle or its parts are removed, altered or destroyed.

Police said they have managed to reduce illegal racing and related fatal collisions, but know the underground hobby still thrives.

"We are making a dent," said Ontario police Cpl. Jeff Higbee. "But it's summertime and ... we expect to see more activity."

Hoang said he was caught late last year racing his prized car, on which he spent at least $10,000 to get into top shape. The 350-horsepower engine topped out at 160 mph, Hoang said, swearing it could beat a Corvette or even a Ferrari.

When police popped open the hood, Hoang said, they found a stolen transmission. Hoang flashed a receipt for the transmission he bought from his father who runs an auto shop and doubted the item was hot.

"Everything on that car was practically brand new," Hoang said as he watched his car get moved to auto death row. "They should take out the stuff that matters, auction it off, and give the money to charity."

Because racers put heavy stress on their vehicles, they often burn out or blow up parts. Higbee said the need for the expensive parts has created a "theft mill" where additional cars usually Hondas or Acuras are stolen and stripped of the necessary replacements.

Most of the cars police examine are illegally modified. Sergio Zavala, 18, was pulled over in his 1993 yellow Honda Civic for a broken tail light in December. He had purchased a B-20 Vtech engine with a double-overhead cam a couple months before, and after a police investigation, was told it was stolen.

Zavala, who admits he's been involved in street racing, estimates he and his mother spent about $10,000 on improvements to his car.

After watching his Civic demolished, Zavala is left without a car as he plans to attend a fire academy in the fall.

"It's heartbreaking to see this," said Zavala, who graduated from high school last week. "This is where all my time and money went."

Maldonado also said he put plenty of time and effort working on his 1992 black Honda Civic. He was stopped in November by police in what Higbee described as an area where racers gather.

The 18-year-old mechanic said a vehicle identification sticker apparently fell off and without it, police suspected some of the parts were stolen. Maldonado stood several feet away from his car as it was pounded into a heap of metal.

Maldonado said he has taken the advice of police by racing legally on one of several race courses around Southern California. For the money spent in fines and other penalties on average about $5,000 for illegally modified cars Higbee said street racers could compete about 250 times a year at a legitimate track.

"If you have to race, take it to a legal venue," Higbee said. "But as long as they keep racing illegally, we keep crushing their cars."

All three men who saw their vehicles destroyed said they believe illegal street racing will continue to prosper across the region.

"It will never go away," Maldonado said. "If it's in your heart, you will continue to do it until you can't anymore."

and a vid to see the ugly cars:

**** them. try to crush my car, its owned by a bank, and im sure the bank isnt going to be happy when i stop making payments and theres no car for them to reposess. might **** up my credit but i can get another car in cash if need be till my credit comes back, however the bank will have nowhere to get their money back, but the ****tards who crushed the car.

thats if they caught me. i im racing someone and i see lights, im going to at least make them work for it. i mean hell, its a federal offense to evade, but youll only get your car impounded, and you can always use that whole "i was scared and ran" routine to the judge, i know many who have done the same and got off with community service and whatever to get their car out of impound, and speeding fines.

i wish the ****ing cops would go out and find some real crimes. theres an entire ****ing ghetto full of crackheads and drug dealers yet theyre out piddling around with their thumbs in their butts for some crime that really isnt a big deal, seeing how many people die a year due to it, it doesnt warrant the amount of attention it gets. more people die from falling coconuts than streetracing related deaths.

Re: Street Racers Get Crushed

if you read the article, the cars that they crushed had stolen parts on them (engines, transmissions, etc.), and they had a court order from the judge to crush them.

Actually the cops "said" that they were stolen parts. I've read this before, but I'm sure some still haven't seen it. The cops literallly pulled them over for racing, looked under their car and saw, and I quote, "numbers on the transmission that were reported stolen." Now, how in ****s name do you have that **** memorized, much less how would it even be in a data base somewhere. Bull****. The kids dad owned a performance shop and the car was just put together. But I do love how the kid says that the car makes "350 hp" and can run with "Corvette's and Ferrari's." I guess he was running a Testarossa and a 1989 TPI Corvette.

Re: Street Racers Get Crushed

I've heard similar stories, and even saw it on some show Cort TV now airs where the cops, if they believe or catch you street racing will seize and demolish your car.

Yeah and that 350 engine? Keeping up with those two cars of all to pick from? My '02 Escort ZX2 got up to around 110, I probably could of pulled another 5 out of it, so I know that kid doesn't know what's going on. And why put 10G's into making a car semi-decent when you can just buy a semi-decent car, wait a little and make a REAL NICE car. I guess I'll never get ricers.

no but i wouldnt doubtr it, theyre trying to shut down Sacramento Raceway because the houses close to it are complaining about the noise, when the raceway was there first!

however they are still building the Atwater Motorsports Park, which is only 35 minutes from me, that will have 1/8 and 1/4 mile drag, Nascar-Ready 1.25mi oval, and various other amenities (lots of shops/garages for teams, etc).

They're doing the same bull**** with our local drag strip. It's retarded. The dragstrip had been there since the '50s, the people bought their houses in neighborhoods right next to it, and then *****ed about the noise! If you don't like listening to the drag strip, don't buy houses that sit right next to it.

Re: Street Racers Get Crushed

Hey, I say if they take down the one in Palmdale they lift the racing punishments here. If they don't give anyone any type of place to race, it's like you are forcing people to do it out on the street rather than on a track.

Abso****inglutely. its the same as if you moved next to an airport. if you dont like the sound then dont live there. ill never understand some people, but more importantly ill never get the people who bow and leave their nuts at the door instead of telling the clowns exactly what we just said.

I got friends who work at the airport and they said the people around there totally understand about the sound and noise and everything. They are all absolutely cool with it.

The real people who complain and ***** about it are the people who are all at the end of the airport where the planes take off. Mostly because all the planes are punching it down the strip gaining speed with all balls out.

but again... if you are anywhere near an airport, DEAL WITH THE ****ING NOISE! YOU MOVED THERE YOU SHOULD'VE DONE YOUR RESEARCH!

when something is stolen from a car, each individual part has a unique number. when those numbers are run NCIC it comes up in a database of whether or not it has been reported stolen.

yeah i was gonna bring that up too. honda theft is VERY ****ing high, and most times the main parts sold on the black market are motors and trannies. if the vin of the chassis does not match the motor or tranny, it usually is a red flag its a swap, in which case the officer knows to do a search.

Re: Street Racers Get Crushed

yeah, almost anything can be entered NCIC...its pretty cool. you may not realize how much stuff has numbers on it that are unique to the cars.

i use this every day its a neat little program National Crime Information Center (NCIC) - FBI Information Systems
