Help me find a cheap PC

I'm looking for a decent PC for my parents. Theirs just got fried. They don't want to spend too much but I don't want them to buy a POS. I really only need a tower. Any thoughts would be appriciated. Thanks!

Re: Help me find a cheap PC

Are you wanting to build it yourself or order it from an online retailer?

Sounds good. I was going to do that but I didn't know if there was a better way to go.

Re: Help me find a cheap PC

nah if youre looking for a bottom of the barrel PC a pre-manufactured is the way to go.

the only time building a pc becomes worth it is when you are looking to spend 1000$ and want to get the best bang for your buck, or are looking to get a high-end rig and dont want to spend 3k on a storebought that still wont be as good as 1000-1200 on a homebrew rig.

Building a pc is usually always much cheaper unless you need the software.

I'm gonna' be an outsider and NOT recommend Dell. Most computer technicians I talk too do not like Dells because the insides are a mess and repairing them becomes a pain. I've heard that you may either get lucky and get a problem free Dell or get one with all problems - 50/50 Chance. Since you are looking for cheap I'd say a Compaq or Gateway. Sometimes you can get a HP for a good price, I've seen them drop to even $700.

+1 to that. I highly recommend NOT getting a Dell (seen way too many people get a POS from Dell). If you want to spend a little more and get a good computer, HP is the way to go. That's all my family has ever run, most problem we have ever had was 1 desktop had a power supply to burn out.

Re: Help me find a cheap PC

Just realized you're looking for a Tower, I was thinking Laptops. An HP Tower can probably go for like $500. I've used HPs and can't remember any problems.

Re: Help me find a cheap PC

I have a Dell tower in the house and a dell laptop. Neither have ever given us problems and were by far the cheapest on the market for what you get.

You hear so many Dell horror stories because they out sell their competition 3 to 1.

Re: Help me find a cheap PC

I believe Dell is second after HP (HP and Compaq). In fact they changed back to their original name of 'Dell Computers' from 'Dell Electronics' or whatever it was because they wanted to focus more on selling their computers rather than TVs because they are loosing revenue. Meanwhile HP has branched into both the TV market and Digital Camera market. Their products their however I cannot back up as well as their PCs

That was bullcrap push out by HP. The only place where HP does better than Dell is in printers.

To put it in perspective, as a Dell tech, most of the problems were created by the user. We rarely had hardware failures. We had more people looking at porn and then getting a virus and blaming it on us. I had a customer once that renamed all of his important files with '.dll' extensions and kept them in the root of C. Then did a system restore and was screaming because 'we lost all of his data.'

Re: Help me find a cheap PC

Hey, I'm not quoting HP, I'm quoting the financing section from Newsday. I work side by side with PC Techs and this is what they tell me about Dells. As a Dell Tech do you fix all or most computer brands or is the majority of your repairs Dell? Plus you go through the guts day in day out so you may not mind the mess. But then again I would say up to 80% of the computers that come in are Dell. Of course most problems come from the user, not every computer has a defect and most will take the wear and tear. The users don't build their computers though.

And if you want to trade stories the best I've heard was my friend found pictures of the user's daughter on the computer and blamed the Tech for putting them there. Oh they were naked photos of here with another girl (both apparently Super-Hawt!).

Oh and how's the whole Dell going from a direct supplier to it's consumers to selling units through Wal-Mart? Eliminating that middle retailer Dell used to brag about?

Don't know who you talked too !!! I've been a tech for over 10 years and will take a Dell any day HP/Compaq are POS the worst machine to work on with there proprietary hardware and lack space inside the box. Dell makes upgrading and removal of HD ,tapedrive etc. a breeze !!!! HP/Compaq are a nightmare
We have a little over 280 Dell desktop and laptops and they run GREAT no problem other then normal everyday issue which normally turn out to be user error

Re: Help me find a cheap PC

My family's had pretty good luck with their Dells. I haven't had any trouble out of my Dell laptop, either (other than spilling Coke in the keyboard, but that was hardly Dell's fault).

Yeah but some users will blame Dell for not installing a cup/bottle holder

I had a lady one day that that Outlook open, three Adobe Reader files open, six IE windows open, and was printing the PDFs and said that something was wrong with her one stick of 256MB RAM because the computer was slow.

I had to get a manager to take that one.
