i just spent about 30 minutes reading this old comp case-mod worklog. it's insane thinking about the ridiculous level of detail this guy thought of

if nothing else, look at the photos of the final product

The inside of that thing looks like the engine bay of something at NOPI.

nice, its just hard to spend that kind of cash knowing that... it will be worthless in like 2 years or 3.... computers go out of date VERY fast.

I couldn't take the mess of tubes on the inside.

I like my wiring non-noticeable.

true, but he can re-use the case and likely just modify or add stuff later down the road when new hardware comes out.

Re: holy computer case modding, batman!

yea, all he'd really have to do would be to replace the drives and motherboard. plug shapes haven't really changed since 2003.. sata was just coming on the scene then

i'm not a big fan of green, but i think it's a cool project

Re: holy computer case modding, batman!

unless, of course, flash hard drives and physics cards become the standard. then he might have to fabricate a different sized slot or something.

physics cards use a pci-e x8 slot.. or at least the ones out now do. they are pretty new though, so they might change

SSHD's though, yea, i dunno what form factor those will end up coming in.. but i don't think they're really get going til 2009

Re: holy computer case modding, batman!

no, but what they're starting to do is use dual and quad core processors more efficiently. they're use one core for the physics, one for the ai, one for the action streaming, and the last for cpu idle tasks; at the same time, the graphics card kicks out the textures and lighting effects

and at some point in the next 4 years, cpu and gpu will be integrated onto one chip... i.e.- 2 or 4 cores = cpu, 2 or 4 cores = gpu + L1,L2 and L3 memory caches, piped through a 2.5ghz system bus to equally fast ddr3 ram

in 4 years computers will seem ridiculously powerful by todays standards
