New PC Setup finally ordered

DFI LANPARTY UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - $139.99

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz Socket AM2 Processor - $229.00

GeIL Black Dragon 4GB(4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Quad Channel Kit Desktop Memory - $269.99

APEVIA ATX-AS680W-BL ATX12V / EPS12V 680W Power Supply - $109.99

my buddy is gonna probably sell me his BFG 7800GT-OC so ill do SLi until they become not enough and upgrade to the 8800's. this ought to run vista pretty well

my current rig i will be most likely bringing to work, my company doesnt seem to realize the need for computers that are better than off-shelf Dell's when doing many things at once like Autocad, Outlook, Adobe, and Excel all at once. 512mb with a shared nvdia 6180LE video card just isnt cutting it. ill stick a cheapo 6800gt in my current rig and bring it to work and run that.

if i can get it, none of my buddies liked vista and threw all their copies of it away (aside from the one i got). otherwise id have to DL it myself.

however after XP x64's lack of driver support, i dunno if i would go that route again, unless Vista x64 has better support, however seeing the lack of support for standard vista, i doubt 64bit vista will have any better.

Vista 64 bit is a bit better. I'd recommend using it or your 4GB purchase was for nothing.

I'd give it a run at least.

I am running Vista, and I need a better proc.

I'm not sure if they fixed it or not, but you can use a 32-bit key on 64-bit still I think.

Re: New PC Setup finally ordered

eh not too bad IMO. my last build 2gb of standard DDR was around 250$ (built the current rig about 1 year ago). so no, i dont think 4gigs of DDR2 is that bad of a price. sure its overkill, but sometimes it feels good to just splurge and get what you really dont need, but feels cool to say you got it anyways.

yeah i cant wait till ****ing AMD starts releasing its 65nm technology. the 6000+ will last me for quite a while though, at least till quad-core prices come down.

I need to start looking on Newegg for my next computer purchase. Might keep the Alienware case but rip it's guts out for new things. If the hardware will fit of course.. but it's pretty ****ing massive inside.

Re: New PC Setup finally ordered

btw, why not just get the new quad core that's already out?

Intel is going to bring out some more Quad core before the year ends and drop the price a **** load so when AMD finally comes out with theirs in March, Intel would already be on top of it with more models.

the quad-cores that are out now are fake quads if i recall. both intel and amd are releasing true quad-core architecture at the same time.

right now i dont see any quad cores on newegg :dunno:, the 6000+ is the highest chip i could find.

rendering can be distributed across each of the four complete execution cores and run in parallel.
theyre four cores but linked in parallel. as i was told, true quad core is like true dual core where both cores work independently,so true quad would be all 4 cores working independently and not linked, and intels true quad cores wouldnt be under the "Core 2" moniker, it would be "core 4" or something like that. i hear this **** from ITT grads so i dunno what kind of weight it holds. basically now the quad cores are just two dual-cores linked together.

There is no "true" quad core out right now. The AMD 6000+ is the best AMD processor you can buy for the price.

in my opinion, i wouldnt even focus on the processor. put your money into the video card and 3 or 4 gigs of RAM... and make sure its a 7200rpm HD. then, think about processor speeds. now, that doesnt mean go out and get a AMD 2500+... i mean go out and get a good processor.. not a top of the line one. besides, you can always o/c the **** out of it with a decent cooling system.

Re: New PC Setup finally ordered

The only game out there that's affected by processor speed (looking at processors released in the last three or four years) is Supreme Commander. The FX-55 that I've got in my big clear box is three years old and doesn't sweat any of the games I throw at it, with that one exception.

Re: New PC Setup finally ordered

you know what part boggles my mind? I have a pretty decent computer... dual core 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, 1600x... I can play Oblivion and FEAR (my 2 most demanding games at the moment), Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander no problem (not maxed out tho). But my PC struggles with SimCity4 and can't even play this old RTS called Battle Realms (released back in 2002 I think) due to single digit frames... even on low and 800x600. I would imagine its some type of driver issue.. but still.. wtf?

Good hardware can only help so much with bad software. That SimCity 4 issue is weird, though...'cause i've played that one on my 6800GT/FX-55 machine without any trouble... :chin:

yeah... i played it on my older pc and it worked fine. it was a nvidia 5900xt, 2500+, and 1GB RAM.

it HAS to be a driver issue... or possibly something along the lines of a corrupted iso? :dunno:

werd. usually thats what i do, buy mid-range processors. but right now, the 6000+ is the same price as my 3800+ was a year ago. AMD prices are ****ing sweet right now, so why not get the best?

the total purchase price of this setup is 10$ more than the total price of my current setup (since i can still see my last order).

Oh man this setup is quick. Havent played any games but just tooling around with miscellaneous programs is a huge difference. right now my sidebar gauge thingy shows the processor at 2% useage and ram at 16% useage (from ~40% with the 1gb of DDR). thankfully i didnt have to reformat since i went with the same board with the same northbridge and whatnot, even though my IT guy was like "no youll have to reformat dude". take that IT guy.

IT guys live by the OSRI.

Congrats. I am wanting to up my proc next to a dual core. I would love to add another HDD and move up to RAID 5. RAID 0 is kinda scary sometimes on bootup.
