The Rum Diary

Anybody read this book by Hunter S. Thompson? I read it awhile ago and really liked it. Here's a quick plot summary:

Quote:
Begun in 1959 by a then-twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary details the life and events of Paul Kemp, a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean. Paul is challenged on many levels as he tries to carve out a more secure niche for himself amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction. Thompson delivers a potent story that pushes the sometimes brutal truth of human relations into your face in such a way that it would be absurd to not laugh.
I bring this up mostly to tell you guys it's being made into a movie, and good ol Johnny Depp is going to step in and play Hunter Thompson's main character, Paul Kemp. From how the book felt, it's going to be a bit like that movie Blow, where things feel surreal, but it's not going to be wacky like Fear and Loathing, this was one of his first books he did.

Re: The Rum Diary

HST is one of my favorite authors. I've been waiting for this movie since pre-POTC 2 and I am completely stoked about it.

Is there any more news on it? I haven't heard much recently on it. Last I remember they were trying to find a roll for Del Toro and they were gonna' have some really hot chick play Chenault.

Re: The Rum Diary

I'm guess Hunter and Johnny Depp are good friends...

Funny you mention Hunter Thompson. I just watched a big thing on the Hell's Angels on the history channel talking about his experience with them... It was a very informative show.

Re: The Rum Diary

I think Depp is obviously dedicating this to Hunter as he committed suicide awhile ago. That really sucked too, reading on the news that he died. When great writers and people die like that but ******* tyrants live on, it really gets me.

Re: The Rum Diary

It'll be good.

From what I remember from the book, there's a lot of drinking, and that same "American Dream" aspect to it that he talked about in Fear and Loathing, but this one dealt with people trying to come to America and suddenly making it because they have so little here. But as American's, we don't see that potential because we are already here and don't have that same background from where we came from to really drive us.

I think that was in there at least.. It isn't the WHOLE book that it's about, but in one chapter he described it.

Oh, also some nude scenes should be in it too :O That and this crazy *** party that turns into some sort of trance orgy.

Re: The Rum Diary

A quick outline of the book:

Friends meet up at a bar and drink, they go to work they drink, they go to bars at night they sleep. Repeat with variation. Repeat with variation. Repeat with variation. Repeat with variation. In between all this drinking though there is the American Dream and how run down Puerto Rico is with poverty and corruption (mostly from American investors).

For those who don't know Depp shot Hunter's ashes out of a cannon per Hunter's request. Prior to filming F&L they had become very good friends.

I still cannot wait for this movie. Looks like I will have to reread the book to hold me over.

Me too. I bet it's going to be great, I'll be there opening night to see it for Hunter.
