Depressed Job Market

I negotiated a severance deal from my former company back in October, and part of that was a 6-month non-compete clause, where I couldn't work in the industry for 6 months.

During that time, I started working on the store - tons of remodeling and whatnot. Wasn't looking for a job, rather going "all in" to get the store up and running.

Then in December I was approached to do some consulting work in Australia - and since I had been bleeding money for 3 months and always wanting to go to Oz, I accepted a deal on a month-to-month basis.

Had to return to Australia 2 weeks ago, and just before I headed back down under, a company approached with an opening, so I decided to talk to them abit about it. On the day I left, I get a formal offer letter while sitting at LAX, for $20k more than I was making at my former company. I figure I'd go ahead and take it for a bit to supplement income while I was still going through the setup process of the store.

I get to Oz, and at the end of the 2 weeks, I sat down with the CEO and let him know I couldn't continue the consulting deal because I was starting with another company on Monday. Basically, he offered to match the deal, and I was somewhat standoffish to that, so he upped the ante.. after still hesitating, he upped it again. finally making an offer I couldn't refuse.. $35k more than I was making at the old company.

then about 15 minutes later, the GM of the company in Australia calls me aside and offers a permanent position in Australia...

3 offers in the course of 2 weeks without once applying for a job or submitting a resume.

when I accepted the job from the CEO, the short conversation afterwards was odd - he inquired that I didn't appear to happy, and I said that I really didn't want either job but would do it for a few years just until the store is making money.

Imagine accepting a job and then immediately telling the CEO that you don't really want it, but you'll do it for a little while

Re: Depressed Job Market

most no compete clauses dont hold up, you can have it looked over and you may not even have to worry about it.

Re: Depressed Job Market

I am happy I have one, it just can be little extreme at times... We do utility work and it can be dangerous by it's nature... trenches and heavy equipment...

Re: Depressed Job Market

I love my job, I worked hard through school to get there and it usually a fun job and is laid back... no one on my back all the time so I can do what I want generally how I want which works for me as I am FAR better if left alone and just told what the final result has to be.

Re: Depressed Job Market

Monday, I was asked to load an excavator onto a trailer, under a power line. I have never loaded a full size excavator before so there was a definite pucker factor. The tracks hang off each side about 6 inches, so it really feels tricky when tracking on and breaking over center. I had a co-worker guiding me on so that helped a bunch..

I enjoy getting to do things like this on one level and on another, it is nerve racking...

Re: Depressed Job Market

Meh, we've been looking for employees for the past few months. Even over $11 an hour it's hard to get anyone that actually wants to work.

It seems it's too much to ask for good driving record, clean background, no drugs, and able to show up on time...
