He will never be as great as Richard Petty or Dale Earnhart Sr.

I lost interest in NASCAR when Rusty Wallace wined over the speeds being too fast, and that they all had families...I figured NASCAR would have told him to find another job; instead they added restrictor plates to slow down the speeds on the super tracks. MEH

The good old days are gone for good

Now Bucko, What you see now a days is N.A.S.C.A.R.
A TV show.
It is "NOT" real racing like we did in the good old days.
We did a lot of Run What ya Brung real racing.
Of course some got hurt , a few got killed but it WAS racing.
Terrible cars, Terrible safety equipment but more fun then eating worms.
My first circle track car was a 1960 English Ford, Ha! Ha! Ha!
I was hot stuff in those days,
Ronnie

Richard Petty was my guy growing up. Then I became a huge Mark Martin fan. I really miss watching those guys race...

RonnieAwsome car Ronnie...who's that young squirt standing in front of it? Can't be you...

I recall the days of the whole family attending the races at Daytona. We'd drag in a cooler the size of a small baby carriage! Fried chicken made the night before, sandwiches, sliced up pie, cold drinks, the works. Can't do that anymore.

I also remember going out to the New Smyrna speedway on Saturday nights. Some "good old boy" racing there too.

How about the Motorcycle racing at Barberville dirt track? That was a lot of fun as well as the Midget cars once in a while.
New Smyrna is still a fun track, They have nights when you can run your Mustang or Vet around the track with no speed restrictions.
The speedway had to get extremely cautious on entry because of Hillary and Obama"s friends the Terrorists.
It is lousy but it keeps people safe in the stands.
A lot of the youngsters will never know the pleasure of watching a REAL RACE in REAL CARS.

Ronnie

But you love him non the less. Take care of dad, as you will recall how much he took care of you while growing up. Give him a hug for no reason, and then observe the smile he will give. Priceless.

Never got there...my father-in-law used to race there back in the early 60's I believe. He was a dirt tracker. Made a living from it in the 50's up in Wisconsin, around the Milwaukee and Racine area. He raced a 50's Mercury and Lincoln, and claims to be one of the first that Ford sponsored. He had some cool pics of himself next to his car with the leather skull cap of a helmet. Lester Presser. If you google the name, you'll find his track racing history. He said he even raced up there against Junior Johnson.
He was a good friend to Smokey Yunick as well, when Smokey had his speed shop in Daytona ("Best Damn Garage In Town").

The best Damn Garage in town was 100% true, ((( Actually specialized in trucks)))
I used to take my Kensworth there for service as well as any car I owned at the time. Smokey was usually in the shop doing anything that needed to be done. He was one hack of a great person and it was a SAD day when he passed away.
I probably seen Lester at one time or another at Barberville.
Those days it was really racing and not a TV show.
I will admit that the NASCAR drivers running bumper to bumper at 190 + MPH do a great job of entertainment, But """RACING""" Not really. All the cars are the same,All of the engine specs are the same and they all seem to run the same. ( Pit stops seem to win these races)
I used to love the Rolex and Continental Challenge but they screwed those up with to many Daytona Specials and Prototypes.
The lower classes are strangled by rules if A car goes to fast the rule makes will add a ton of weight.
Sports cars used to run classes and still do but it seems that each car in each class now are all the same performance and just run around the track in a line like the NASCAR driver do.
Ronnie

I completely agree, hence my reasons for not attending anymore. And now it's a huge camping event as well, cluttering up the infields so anyone in a lower seat can't view the back stretch.

Yesterday, I woke up at 5A and ran a bunch of errands. Then met my dad at noon and drove to East Lansing for the MSU basketball game. After that, off to our favorite Mexican restaurant for booze and tacos. MSU hockey game at 8P. Then drove all the way back to Detroit.

Today...snow drift time in the Nissan!

Yesterday I got to watch my service bill from the Toyota dealership drop from the thousands to about mid 700's. Glad the airbag harness is still under warranty. I got to drive the family around in a 16 Sienna, (3rd gen).

Also checked out what I believe to be a 2010 302 Boss, in red of course.

Airbag harnesses, power steering line was leaking, cleaning of power steering system, tire rotation, mult-point check, and they said they decarbed the upper intake and throttle body and such. Did they we shall see.

Best part. Airbag light just came back on.

This is why you always check the vin in more than one place. So this would be a poser then? Here is the pic I took when I was at the light.
