what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

I've noticed that almost everything I pull up on the net is bashing LCD calling it an inferior format to both DLP and Plasma, with Lcos being considered equal, yet it seems that all the stores are gearing up with LCD sets and the few people I've talked to prefer lcd over plasma if the price were near the same.

am I really that out of the norm, that I like the brighter picture and much better color warmth with LCD better? not to meantion that even though I keep reading about how the new plasma sets cannot loose color or brightness over time (comparable to a CRT, and supposedly equal to a lcd) that I keep hearing from people with plasma sets that claim to notice a difference only after a couple of years of use.

the only thing that I see about LCD that I don't like is they seem to have a more digitized look to them than plasma, almost as if all of the plasma sets have some sort of filtering built into them like the old CRT rear projection screens did

BTW its time to buy a set, 50 or 52, 46 is a possibility as well.

Re: what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

Go to Best Buy, or several such stores, and look at them and decide which one you like the best. I went with a 42" plasma display, because I thought it looked better and was several hundred dollars cheaper than a comperable 42" LCD display.

Re: what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

i might be crazy but i think LCD looks sharper, crisper and more vibrant than Plasma or DLP. i know facts are Plasma or DLP have better contrast ratios and resolutions, but i dunno, i just think LCD looks better. plus im sick of massive objects taking up floorspace.

Re: what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

We are about to get a 37-42" flat screen shortly...Chrissy's dad is going to sell the 42" old school big screen he bought her several years ago instead of shipping here...and is going to buy us a flat screen to replace it. I'm thinking about the one brent got...but I am wondering if I don't want a 42-46"....or maybe even 50"....he said it doesn't matter...

I have a 50" rear projection LCD Sony and a 42" plasma Panasonic and both have equal HD quality.

Re: what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

the more I look the more I realize that

: I like the slightly brighter picture that a good LCD gives
: I like the better color vividness an LCD gives (a big deal)
: I don't see color warmth being drastically better on plasma than LCD like most claim
: I like that the plasma seems to cover up blemishes on compressed video much better
: rainbow effects seem more apparent on plasma's (not a such a big deal)
: I like the clarity of high speed motion on the plasma apposed to the LCD (a big deal)
: even the higher dollar LCD's have still have a little black color depth issuses

so overall I think I like the lcd better for the vivid color and brightness... the clarity just seems a notch better to me. however the highspeed motion on LCD leaves alot to be desired.

looks like i'll be looking at either probably a 50" plasma or a 46 Lcd

I personally don't like the overly bright colors. They seem unrealistic. My 42" Panasonic Plasma has a "Vivid" setting where the colors are much brighter... and I never use it.

Re: what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

The folks have a 42" plasma, and it's very nice to watch, but there is a little swatch of color missing out of it, almost like someone punctured it yet the screen is smooth. It's just burnt out in that one spot.

I've been doing some research and I like the longevity of an LCD better. The major draw back to me as silver posted is the high speed clarity. That is a big deal to me also, but I'll still be going with LCD. Anything projection is out of the question with me though.

Re: what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

So Sharp and Pioneer are going to join forces. Sharp will have an 18% interest in Pioneer, Pioneers biggest holder.

Re: what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

^ That's about what they have to do to compete with Samsung. Samsung has braned themselves the go to company for the best HDTV.

Re: what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

^yea, but samsung's markup is ridiculous... if anything, the sharp/pioneer co-op will depress pioneer's own ridiculously high prices, forcing samsung to drop theirs as well

can't complain, it means when i'm ready to buy one, there will be better ones for better prices

Re: what is the deal with HDTV reviews?

Do you think this might mean though Pioneer will have LCDs and Sharp will have Plasma? I mean what does the future hold... I see many possibilities. As for the current competition with Samsung and Pioneer Plasmas, well Pioneer are top of the line and the new generation that just came out is supposed to be way better. Samsung makes excellent TVs but they can afford to sell their cheaper than Pioneer. If you can afford it, Pioneer all the way!
