My new PC!

My buddy came over last night and he helped me put together my first PC. What do you think?

The biggest problem was the heatsink, it's HUGE! We were worried that the case wouldn't close because it's so big. Everything though went smoothly, unfortunately the motherboard doesn't have a firewire port. Not a huge deal, but oh well.

I had some problems when trying to install Windows XP Pro with my CD key, I accidentally told it to install the retail version instead of the OEM and it wouldn't accept my key. So I went back and tried putting in the OEM version, but for some reason my keyboard couldn't respond when the option came up. I thought my PC froze, but I plugged in an older keyboard using the Keyboard port and it worked. Everything is great, I'm just putting things on disk on this machine and getting ready for the big move.

Specs:

Case - 3 120mm fans, 1 200mm fan
320 GB HD
2 GB Crucial Ram
8800 GTS 640MB GeForce Card
GigaByte Motherboard - Accepts DDR2 & DDR3 Ram
HP DVD/CD Burner 20X Speed
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0ghz
700 watt Thermaltake Power Supply
Thermalright ULTRA-120 Aluminum Heatpipe Heatsink

yeah same here, seems my USB keyboard is useless in anything but windows. have to use the little USB>PS2 convertor when altering my Bios or whatnot.

How is the 8800GTS working out? Everyone i know has gone with SLi 7950's and nobody has yet stepped up to a GeForce8 series card. when you finally play a game that taxes it let me know how it runs, i might step up to a 8800GTX off the bat if thats what it takes to be able to play BioShock/Crysis/GoW/CoD4/Etc on full everything with great framerates.

I'll tell you once I get everything up and running. Right now it's chilling out sitting on my bed while I transfer things onto my external hard drive and on some CD's. When I do get everything transfered I'll get the Orange Box and play some TF2 and grab some games I've had that would normally slow and lag me up a bit. BioShock would be a good test though, they have a demo for that I could try it out on?

I checked with all my fans running on high the computer stays at an 80ish degrees Fahrenheit which is awesome. My last PC ran at 129 degrees Fahrenheit.

Speaking of heat, I'm placing my Alienware PC over in the living room to replace the POS Dell that's there. My parents are afraid of the heat issue, I have a spare 120mm fan that I could stick in there for more air flow, but does anyone else have any suggestions as to how to cool it down more besides getting a new case? I figure more air flow the better.

Also, the reason for the huge upgrade is because the Alienware ****s up from time to time, people have told me that the blue screen I've been getting was because of an issue with the RAM. I went to Crucial.com and they have NO ram that will work with this setup. I figure since it's so old they don't carry it. Could anyone help me out with finding new ram for this machine? I think this is it but I'm not 100% sure.

Newegg.com - CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Desktop Memory - Retail

It's a Pentium 4 processor setup, so I think that Ram will work, I just want others opinions and confirmations so when I get it I don't waste my money finding out it isn't compatible. Thanks guys!

Re: My new PC!

very nice. it's been too long since i've done that. that is a sweet pc though. The heatsink is the worst part of putting one together imo...smashing it onto the processor sucks.

i like it a lot.

i think thats only if you actually buy it (like i did). otherwise im sure the crack/workaround has unlimited times it can be used.
