My parents had this old Gateway laptop that kicked the bucket after a while - the hard drive was toast, only 1 USB port worked, ethernet port didn't work, the card slots didn't work, and the battery can't hold a charge. I decided I wanted to get a digital picture frame for my office and the bigger ones are pretty pricey so I decided to make one out of the old laptop after a visit home and convincing the folks to give it to me
I put Knoppix onto a CD and let the computer run on that (it has a slideshow program with it). Since the computer is barely doing anything when the slideshow is running, I rarely hear the CD drive or the processor fans spin up. I plugged a 4-port USB adapter into it so that I can plug in the thumbdrive used to store the pictures as well as a mouse and keyboard to control the computer if I need to. I used a 9"x12" matte and a 12"x16" frame to house it all and it cost me less than $30 to put it all together.
