Cool Into the Blue...

Well as some of you might remember, some time ago, I was looking at going into the Air Force.

At that time, I had been permanently disqualified because I had been taking Nexium for G.E.R.D. (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease). The reasoning was because in Basic Training, you are not allowed to take any medication of any kind, and the civilian doctors at MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) got it into their heads that I could not sleep at night if I was to be taken off the medication. This had NEVER been implied by me and if anything I had told them when I didn't take it, it would only OCCASIONALLY keep me awake at night when I was younger even if I ate spicy foods.

So, the next step was to be off the medication for 6 months and try again. So in September, I had been off the Nexium for 6 months (surprisingly problem free, I guess whatever was wrong before ahd been fixed). I contacted the recruiter again. MEPS cleared me to go back up. The day before I was to go, MEPS calls my recruiter and says that I have been denied return because "they didn't realize I had been up there already". In order for me to return, they needed a bunch of paper work from my current doctor saying that my diagnosis for G.E.R.D. had never been based off any tests (which it hadn't). So we send them the letter and it's still not good enough. Then they want me to have what's called an Upper GI, where you swallow barium and have an x-ray image taken of your stomach to see if you reflux. According to the test, I reflux slightly after drinking, but not ater eating and cannot be made to reflux at all any other times. So we send that up. The doctors still disqualify me, but they send it to the Air Force Surgeon General for his waiver which can take up to 45 days to get back.

Finally, as of yesterday, the Surgeon General has approved me for processing. On this following Tuesday, I'll be going to M.E.P.S. for a brief physical inspection, and then job selecting.

Being that I made a 96 out of a possible 99 on the ASVAB I am "exceptionally well qualified", and therefore only need to select 3 jobs, whereas those who score below a 90 have to select 4 possible jobs and a "skill area". The skill area is where most people get screwed on their jobs. The skill area means that if a selected job is not available, they get the first one in that field that is available. So if they pick the Electronics skill area, they might get to sweep floors, in the electronic department.

So looks like in 4 years when I am ready to go back to civie life, I'll have an Associate's and a Bachelor's in my field (Avionics) all paid for, 4 years of military training, and 4 years of experience. People in this area (North Alabama) who have a very general degree and no experience usually start out at 50k a year in this type of job, those with a more specialized degree make about 60k starting pay.

So, depending on when the first of the 3 jobs comes available, I could be gone very soon, or a couple months from now.

Re: Into the Blue...

Yeah, I wouldn't mind flying but it would be a 6 year commitment and my vision is poor.

However, now the Air Force pays for Airmen to have either LASIK or PRK done regardless of the job.

Re: Into the Blue...

Just got back from MEPS today. I'm signed up for 3 Avionics jobs and will get the first one available. So depending on when one of the jobs opens up, I could be leaving as early as the first week of November, or as far out as March. I hope to God it wont be that long though, there is absolutely no way I will last that much longer at my current job.

Re: Into the Blue...

I ****ing hate the people at MEPS. Almost all of them that do the physical work are ********... They're job to do their DAMDEST to not allow you into the military. EX. I tried to join a couple years back, and weight was my problem. So I worked my *** off and dropped over 20 lbs in two months to make the date that i was to go to MEPS. I had to weigh 179 for 5' 7" . So I get down there and I weight 178.6, ****ing awesome I'm set. Nope, the thing that they use to measure you doesn't stop at a 90 degree angle so they fudged it and it made me 5' 6" so I had to drop another 2.6 lbs. As soon as I got back the Navy recruiter, the Army Recruiter, and the AF recruiter measured me at 5' 7" 1/2, 5' 7', and 5' 8" respectively. If the military is so determined to not let me in, **** em... What's so dam stupid is that after you join, they don't even go by that scale anymore. All you have to do is pass a PT(physical training) test every so often. It's like x situps in a minute, x pushups, and do a mile and a half in x time(can't recall the numbers). Glad i didn't join anyway, I have a kickass job(in which I work for the military through civilian contract anyway) and met the woman who made my life complete.......

Anyways, good luck with everything and hope you get in!! Go for the tankers or the heavies in general. Those guys are so dam cool. When they come in for the air shows, graduations, and Career days, those are some of the nicest guys. Then after that the fighter pilots. It's wierd how everyone thinks those guys are the ********.... The worst and cockiest people I've met in the military are the brats that are still in pilot training.

Re: Into the Blue...

Yeah MEPS guys are absurd, but it's the civilians that are the pain. The AF wanted me pretty badly and in all honesty did quite a bit of work to get me in. All it was is the ******* docs who are retired and just do this for the heck of it and could really give a crap who gets in or not.

Re: Into the Blue...

I have to get on a scale and have my height check every time I do a PT test...and yes your weight does count...well now it is more of a waist measurement/BMI thing that counts for 30 of the 100 points in the PT test.

Only ******* I ran into at MEPS was the guying doing the eye tests. I was doing the depth perception test...got to the last little row of rings and quickly answered..got 1 out of 8 wrong and he tried saying I had no depth perception. Pissed me off, since at the time I had plans to pursue OTS and flight school.

Well I guess welcome darkshadow to the AF...May will make 6 years for me...which reminds me, I too need to change my name...no longer a Senior Airman (SrA) Got promoted a year ago. And at least you didnt go fully into an Open General type slot...you did get the 3 choices in black and white before you signed right? if not you can be standing gate guard or running convoys in Iraq as an SP.

Oh and I swear the 2 docs that are there are 90 years old.

I dont know...after growing up in SA. I was telling a guy that was on the same flight as me that it would be wonderful in Feb/March time frame. (I left Feb 11th) Got off the plane in early Feb and had to take our jackets off, just like I told him...3 days later it was 40* and raining....it was like that a lot through basic for me.

No, I most definitely got 3 selections in writing. I'm waiting in limbo until one of those comes available.

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm VERY much a warm weather person. I hate the cold. I'm not looking forward to doing basic in the winter, even if it is Texas.

Re: Into the Blue...

I know how you feel. 6 years in San Antonio, 3 in Huntsville, back to San Antonio for Basic, then up to Witchita Falls, Texas, and Little Rock for 7 months. Then to Montgomery for 2 years, with a trip to the Desert in there, and then back to the Huntsville area since, so about 13 years in warm to hot climates....I do not take well to the cold. Especially after my Desert trip.

Kind of funny that I dont like the cold anymore since the first half of my life was NW Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Germany and New Jersey.

But when I went to basic, it was an odd end to winter/beginning of spring. There were Christmas mornings I was out side in SA in shorts and a t-shirt.

did find this little fun fact though

An estimated population of approximately 1.3 million in 2006 comprised of 51.7% females and 48.3% males.

Re: Into the Blue...

Finally got a ship date about 2 months ago. Going to Basic on the 29th of April. I'll then spend 2 months in Biloxi, and then 4 months at Sheppard AFB in Texas. Then who knows where.

Well the whole time I'm there I will probably be confined to the base along with all the other nubs. Plus I've also been told biloxi is still trashed from Katrina.
