"ya'll" or "y'all"

I'd never even seen it spelled as "y'all" until recently. I've always spelled it "ya'll"...

Re: "ya'll" or "y'all"

it is short for you all...there for it has to be y'all....

it can't be ya'll...even though I think everyone south of the mason dixon spell it that way...if it was right...then it would be short for ya all...and that wouldn't make sense at all...

Re: "ya'll" or "y'all"

its y'all.

like he said , You All, since you pronounce the entire "All" part, and only skip the "ou" to avoid makeing a full "You" pronunciation. Thus "Y'all".

I don't SAY it, but I'd spell it y'all (its you ' all hence y'all)

Gramatically speaking of course, southerners are inherently evil

I even hear people around here say Cold Drink. And then to the same people, Beer is not just Beer, it's a Cold Beer. Never is beer uttered without first being preceded by Cold.

I do sometimes specify that the beer is cold... "Hey man, you wanna cold beer?"

Sometimes I don't even specify that it's a beer that I'm offering... "Anybody need a cold one?"

Re: "ya'll" or "y'all"

i dont think northerners say "you all"... well... at least not in my general area (PA, NJ, NY, CT, VA, MD, etc). we say "you guys" (i think). then there are some in the western PA and OH area that say "yins" or "you'ns" which i think came from scots-irish heritage...

we say a lot of weird stuff that originates from the melting pot of english, german, scots, irish, italian, etc... basically all the poor mining, steel fabrication, farming minorities came over and founded a weird *** dialect that still stays in tact. in fact, pittsburgh is still a VERY blue collar city. only thing we have (a bit of sarcasm) other than blue collar jobs is the medical field and education.

Pittsburgh Speech & Society
PITTSBURGHESE .com
Pittsburgh English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

just to name a few weird *** pittsburgh words...

sweeper - vaccuum cleaner
gumband - rubberband
red up - to clean
nebby - someone who is annoying and trying to get into your business
slippy - slippery
stillers - the steelers!
jagger - thorn (from a jaggerbush)
hoagie - sub
buggie - shopping cart
warsh - wash
crick - creek

etc...

and apparently there is a different way we ask questions with a falling intonation at the end... it definitely throws people off because they dont know if we are asking them a question or not haha.

oh, and we also say "the grass needs cut" instead of "the grass needs to be cut" and all other sayings like it... for example "the car needs washed" instead of "to be washed"

I've noticed even here in Central PA, People talk odd, even my professors, when talking about things like the grass 'needs TO BE cut'

They say, Needs Cut (like yours)

Or in the case of cars, they say 'needs fixed'

'This needs fixed,' 'That needs fixed' etc, it really throws me off, at least used 'fixing'
