To be clear. It isn't normal for a teenager to steal a car... Thrash on it. And run it in a ditch. That tells me they lost control and were WRECKLESS. I guess because they didn't KIlL someone, it is ok and well just give em a slap to the wrist.

If you think it is, that is concerning.

Yea I get the whole "live and let live" philosophy but this isn't joy riding in your "parents" car , this is STEALING that's a completely different species of trouble.... Not cool if you ask me

I mean I did alot of dumb ***** when I was 16 but never ever broke into somebody's car though that's b.s you don't have to do that to have fun. It would be different if you left the car running while you went into the corner store because then that's shame on you for being a dumb a$$. But breaking into a car? naw man you gotta learn the hard way...

I agree with B8E's post above. Stealing is a known wrong, illegal and the act deserves significant punishment. Too often, age is a consideration in the severity of that judicial punishment. Nobody wants to flagrantly ruin a young life, including me. But... The stolen item was not a pack of gum or a pair of sneakers at Walmart. It was an expensive automobile and that is at the very least, grand theft and a felony. The kid/s deserve to pay the piper. They won't learn much by being slapped on the hand, told to never do it again and sit back to watch their parents embarrassingly pay for their actions. The kids deserve to tote around a felony on their record/s and see how detrimental that is to future employment, quality of life, etc.. "NIP IT, Nip it in the bud!", as Barney Fife once said.

The kid's should be punished without question. But I don't agree on the felony, just put them on the cop's radar and some community service in that cool looking jump suit. When you label a kid a felon, you have created a criminal for life.

I may be hard on punishment but, I've been in a few scrapes myself and know that I knew better than to have done what I did, regardless of my young age. I paid my dues and never asked for or expected leniency.

The highlighted statement above is a knee-jerk blanket statement that is not necessarily factual. There are a lot of kids out here that started out badly (whether it was peer pressure or merely a stupid idea or act of their own), that have wised up and seen the light, and have later on, shown and proved to lead productive and respectable lives. There are a lot of felons out there that, unless you looked up their criminal history, would never know they had any serious scrapes with the law.

IMO, putting kids on cop's radar isn't always smart either. You don't want prior offenders eyeballed, hounded and possibly stalked and/or harassed wherever they go. If no further offenses were committed, when would that stop? A year, two, ten, never? Kids commonly get nervous when law enforcement is around, just like some adults do. They'll make a little nervous bobble, the cops will gain "probable cause", then they'll pounce. I've experienced some of that in my younger days. Several times, I've been pulled over and f'ed with unnecessarily. If the cop hadn't been tailing me all over town, I wouldn't have been nervous, would have spent less time looking in the rearview at his glaring high-beams and would have been focused on my driving.

Using age as a discriminatory factor in charging and passing sentence, grants everyone the expectation of being treated the same. At what age should the sentence change to hold offenders absolutely and strictly accountable for their actions? 19, 21, 25, 30? A couple of years either way shouldn't make any difference at all in sentencing. If anyone is old enough to legally drive a car, they should be expected to know that car theft is a serious crime and it comes with stern and sometimes haunting penalties. You know, we all pay higher insurance premiums because cars are stolen and oftentimes damaged. I'm not too keen on paying for someone else's weekend enjoyment, when the disrespectful and stupid decide they want to play thief or take a dare from one of their buddies with other people's property.

Maybe the parents should spend a little more time preventing something like this.

I understood stupid decisions at that age. Let the conviction ruin any chances at an easy future and I promise others would pay attention.

ya. A cop would be better off taking them. I would slave the snot out of them and maybe accidentally bump them in the head or something....worse.

Hell, anyone could have hitchhiked and carried the part from PA to your home by now. I'd call UPS and have them elevate the mode of shipping. There's no valid excuse why it's being shipped to so many en-route locations. 1-800-742-5877

ya it was only a firewall adjuster but I can't even put my clutch cable in until I get the adjuster. I only ordered them 6 or so hours apart and I got the cable last Thursday. They keep telling me they can't make an exception for one package. So I contacted AM about it. Asked if they could just resend it and if the other one showed up I would return it. At my cost even. Unless it cost half or so of the original purchase then I would just pay the full price and keep it. Pretty sure I could use it somewhere else. I dunno. Is that too much to ask?
