Which cost more.....poll

So...pick at your minds for a minute. Which do you think cost more and by how much. My 18x10 Chrome Fr500's with KDW2 295/30-18's on them or my tag.

Re: Which cost more.....poll

I had to register my cobra from an out of state purchase...and know the fun of that.

My guess is registration was at least $2000...mine was $1700 only because I received a 5% tax break and only had to pay 4% tax on it.

Re: Which cost more.....poll

the cost of your car all depends on your mileage and the KBB value of your car in Mississippi

Knowing how much it cost for the tag to my truck (i.e. $480 if I recall), I would say that the wheels/tires cost just a touch more then the tag, but not by very much...

My guess is your tag was about $550 and the wheels/tires were about $600...

*edit* Do you mean tag alone or tax & tag combined? If you mean tax and tag, its 5% of whatever you paid for the car, plus about $500 for the tag...so that would be closer to $1500-$2000 which means tax/tag would cost more than rims/tires...

It is like that here in LA too....9% tax on the blue book value of your car...which happened to be $31k when I did the deed...

So, my guess is his is worth at least $26-27k per KBB....so it would all depend on how much tax y'all have to pay.

Assuming you payed $25K for the car, tax/tag will run you about $1750

They took mine twice on a single purchase. I paid 8% sales tax in NY when I bought the car...I then had to pay 5% more sales tax when I registered it down here.

If he had papers to prove he had previously paid LA sales tax, then it is against the law. However, if he did not have said papers because they were lost in the flood, then the state has him by the short hairs.

Here, in state/out of state...doesn't matter. You buy something privately, you pay tax at registration.

$1700 to register a $#%*@& vehicle? Holy ****!

Costs me $70/yr up here whether it's a brand new registration or a renewal.

Re: Which cost more.....poll

It is only that expensive if you did not buy your vehicle at a dealership IN LA and pay sales tax on it. If you bought it privately, or at a dealership out of state, then they make you pay sales tax on it the first time you register it.

After the first time, here anyhow, it is only like $60 ever other year or something like that.

Pretty much all states work this way on private and out of state sales. They all want their cut. Just some states, like LA, twist it so that they get a cut no matter what. When I bought my GT in LA in 2000, then moved to NY, NY gave me 100% credit on the tax I paid in LA because they were equal at the time. So it was just normal registration fees.

Re: Which cost more.....poll

Actually, you pay sales tax on the vehicle in the state in which you are registering it...regardless of where you bought it from or who you bought it from (i.e. dealership/person/etc)...

The difference comes when you buy a car from a dealership in the state in which you are registering the vehicle, the sales tax is included in the financed price of the car...therefore your monthly payments include the states sales tax in them...When you buy a car in one state or from an individual and register it elsewhere, you have to pay the sales tax for that state of registry separate...

For instance, I bought my Yellow Mustang in Mississippi from a dealer, but it was originally registered in NJ because I still claimed residence with my parents while in school...Therefore I had to pay NJ sales tax on the car of 6% at the time plus the registration fee, so it cost me nearly $2000...Then I changed the registration later to Mississippi and only had to pay the $400 dollar registration fee in Mississippi, sales tax was already payed for in NJ because thats where it was originally registered...

Now for my truck, it was bought and registered directly in mississippi at the time of purchase, so the 5% mississippi sales tax was included in the financed amount for the vehicle so all i had to pay at the time was the $500 for the tag itself...

Because Brad bought the Cobra elsewhere, he could not finance the taxes into the loan so he had to pay them separately when he got his tag, which is 5% of the purchase cost, but the $500ish for the tag itself...

Regardless of where, how, or from whom you buy a vechile, you still pay taxes on that vehicle upon registry, the only difference is when/how you pay those taxes...in one lump some or as part of the financed cost of the vehicle...

Re: Which cost more.....poll

I understand that, but the problem is we live in the great state of Louisiana and they don't care what state you paid sales tax in or how many times you paid sales taxes in other states if it was regestered on another state and you reregester it in Louisiana you will have to pay sales taxes again. hense the reason my brother in law paid sales tax twice in Louisiana, but he also paid sales tax in atlanita so he paid sales tax a total of 3 times. to me thats just criminal

^^ Correct, however, some states allow you a credit for taxes paid in other states. Therefore, you don't have to pay full taxes on it...or none at all...as long as you can prove how much you paid.

however, since no tax was paid on brads car, he is hosed either way.

IDK Vehical registration in SC will not go above $300 reguardless of what you drive. It could be a Enzo and it would be $300.

My tag renewal will still be 250 next year and slowly go down from then on. Regardless of the year, the least you will pay on registration taxes for buying a vehicle is 300.
