awd cars suggestions... the GT time may be over

So... we're having like a blizzard right now and I've been stuck 3 times in this hour. Sadly, even on almost flat ground. Being that this will probably not be the last time Iowa gets snow, I feel it's time to start looking at other car options. Thus, I ask you for your awd car opinions. I'd prefer something that gets above 25 mpg and is around $10,000... I'll be trading the GT on it, and would prefer to either not have a payment, or have a very small one. So up to around $13,000-$14,000 probably. So let me hear it.

^+1.

yea check out your local car/truck trader book that comes out each week and look for an old chevy or cherokee thats rly beat up but has 4wd. ive seen plenty of beaters round my area that would work for me for around 2k give or take. you will definitly regret selling the gt.

Re: awd cars suggestions... the GT time may be over

or what you could try doing is going to a repo auction and buying a fwd car or 4wd truck cheap. my dad got a 96 toyota corolla for less then $1500 to drive to work and it runs alright.

buy a DD and store the stang for the winter. or do what i do, hitch rides during the winter. if i didn't give up my stang to a deer, i'm sure as hell not giving it up to some snow.

yeah I know I'd miss the GT. I will check to see if I can find a cheap car. I'm not sure that my apartment place would be in love with me filling two spots, but **** 'em. Anyway, I'll see what I can do.

Re: awd cars suggestions... the GT time may be over

what's a really cheap kind of car or jeep or truck that would work well? I'd love a jeep that would be extremely cheap... just cause I can put large wheels on it if it didn't already have it, and it wouldn't get stuck... no matter what. (ideally)

The only slight problem with them is the less weight they have on the back, not to mention the longer wheelbase. Add some stuff to the bed and its all good, but the back end comes around easy on those things.

look around an you can find em for pretty cheap. 4x4, strait 6, lots of torque, lots of aftermarket, and the 4.0 will last forever.

also, it doesnt matter how awesome the rig is, you can always get stuck. the rig can only take you so far, skill of the driver is most of it.

Re: awd cars suggestions... the GT time may be over

yeah usually multiple spots at apartment complexes are not an issue, you just have to talk with the management on getting an extra space in your name if one is available, otherwise your secondary car would have to be parked in overflow/guest parking.

if youre looking for an awd car then youre pretty much limited, and if youre gonna trade the GT for one you will regret it. hell if it means anything, i couldnt even stomach trading my GT over for a brand new Evo, and im sure everyone one here knows my affinity with the 4g63, because i knew i would regret it the first time i tried to get sideways at a stoplight.

methinks you should find a cheap 4WD beater.

find a $500 fixerupper, that needs just body/interior work and drive it when you can't/wont drive the mustang...

Selling the car because it snows 10-20 days out of the year is stupid.

i would move haha...

my family back home had a nissan xterra (2000) and i used to drive that when the weather got bad (when the mustang couldnt even pull out)... it was pretty bad on gas though and the car overall wasn't that great. it was the xterra's first year i believe.

Re: awd cars suggestions... the GT time may be over

I second the not selling the stang here are some options...
Get an 87 to 96 Ford Bronco or F150 you can score then for the cheap and also if need be haul Mustang parts or the whole mustang to a track or your friends out of a ditch.......
Dont move yeah the snow coverage down here in the south is kinda suck but if you live in the mountains you get some even when the valley doesnt, I send pics to folks in Chattanooga and make em sick when I have two or three inches and they got fluries...
Also noboby know how to drive in the snow or ice in the south for the most part.....

im pretty sure Evos, WRX/STi can do it on the freeway. i know a few gsx dsm guys have popped off high 20's on the freeway and low 20's in city in stock form. the Legacy gets mileage a little better than a wrx too so that might also get 25mpg being awd. however mileage takes a big hit once you reach positive boost so to get the best mileage in boosted awd cars you have to stay out of boost, which is pretty hard on stock insta-spool turbo's if you want to get anywhere.

awww poor guy. lol. trust me jimmy, i feel your pain. i live in IA too and i know how much all the snow & ice SUCKS right now. i definitely agree that you would miss the GT if you sold it. i know it sucks w/ the bad weather, i don't take my out at all when it's bad, so i can't relate w/ getting stuck, but i've been there, done that!

definitely try to find an older car/truck, whatever you want and can get for cheap to get you around in the snow, or car pool if you can.

best of luck, i've been frustrated a time or two too, but keep the stang if you can!

Don't you live with your folks?

I looked into buying a house when my girlfriend and I move in together in April, but decided against it even though the rent at our apartment is within about 10% of what our house payment would have been. I just A. don't want to furnish a 3BR/2.5BA house for 2 people that will share 1BR/1BA and B. don't know if the Company is going to move me when I graduate. Some things are about more than money.

yup.

i dont make enough to live on my own, and dont have a wife/2nd income, and nobody i know is roomate worthy. when i do move out, the apartment or place im renting must have a garage, which means theres almost $900-$1000 a month for rent before utilities.
