gas guzzler tax?

So I took my car out to the Ford dealer for its inspection and emissions. They actually had quite the line up from what they usually have. They had a gray gt500, a brand new roush and a bunch of the shelby gts. The gt500 had a $1300 gas guzzler tax; what is this tax for? Also, do the dealers do the shelby gt add ons, cuz the white side scoops didnt match the white on the body. Looked really ****ty and I would have made them repaint um if I was to buy that thing with the rediculous add on of $15k for the simple shelby package add on.

Re: gas guzzler tax?

Gas guzzler tax comes when the car doesn't meat a certain mileage standard for the class.

Quote:
The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS.

The fuel economy figures used to determine the Gas Guzzler Tax are different from the fuel economy values provided on this web site and in the Fuel Economy Guide. The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may be more or less than the EPA published value. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).

Chart --> Frequently Asked Questions

I had to pay $1000 GG tax when I bought the car. In 03, the supercharged saleens came with a $3000 GG tax I believe.

Basically, it is just a lame additional tax that sometimes is and sometimes isn't applied to the sticker. I believe 04 cobras did not have a GG tax, but still sold for the same amount as 03's with the GG tax. Never seen an 04 window sticker though so I can't say for sure.

Re: gas guzzler tax?

Both of my vehicles have a gas-gussler tax...woot!!! generally speaking, all 8+ cylinder motors have a gas guzzler tax...

and as far as the shelby gt goes, the cars roll off the Ford assembly line as Mustang GT's, and then a certain number are sent to Shelby Inc. for retrofitting with the necessary parts for them to become Shelby GT's and they lose the Mustang name...

Re: gas guzzler tax?

i think its bull****.

i dont think people should be penalized for liking vehicles that get crappy mileage, its like being punished for doing nothing wrong, sorry big government if i like a car with balls and not a ****ing weak *** prius that cant get out of its own way.

i think its great those that give a **** about mileage get a little discount for buying a car that fits their needs, but on the flipside those that buy a car for other means (towing, performance, etc) get punished? bull****.

Re: gas guzzler tax?

they had to add the little shift light to get the 03 cobras out with only a 1k gg tax. The 04s they got around it and just raised the price.

+1.

But I think its ****ty how they do the stripping. none of its painted anymore. Could they take a little time to actually paint the stripes on the car and take pride in the work? is that asking too much? imho they look like **** with the vinyl decal stripes.

Re: gas guzzler tax?

Specially stripes that are not continuous and stop when they go around things like the license plate and 3rd brake light.

Answer to your question is simply this...paint = extra time to produce. Vinyl is quicker and cheaper...therefore the bean counters are happy. All the while vinyl = cheap to the customers...specially when it starts to bubble and peel later down the road.

all 03's?

i dont have one :dunno:

is it an actual dash light or is it something else (like a shift light on a aftermarket tach)? ive heard people talk about them but i though they were on just special cars, cars with them got the reduced gg tax and those without just had to pay full gg tax.

Re: gas guzzler tax?

they are on all 03 cobras. Its a little yellow arrow that points up and comes on when you need to shift (or when it THINKS you need to shift...) if yours doesnt come on its due to a tune or its broke.

Right....all 03/04's got them. If yours doesn't come on, it might be set to come on hella high in your tune. Mine is set to come on at 6200 right now. Stock it was set to come on around 1750.

I think it's crap too, but then I see all these morons driving around in those large SUV's, and there's only one person driving around in it. When I see that, I chuckle and remind myself that he had to pay a little extra

Yeah we have a **** load of short people who live over here, most to all of them are driving SUV's or anything higher than the average sized car. Mostly because they can't see over people on foot, so they want the advantage of looking over people now. Big ****ing deal, they all still driving with their phones on and get into accidents anyway

the penalty for buying a "GG" should simply be the fact that you have to buy more gas to go the same distance as others. that's it.

stupid gov

I think SUV's are exempt, since I think they qualify as trucks.
