Blu-Ray's big advantage?

Payoffs.

Sound Advice: Blu-ray wins in format war, but at what cost?

Re: Blu-Ray's big advantage?

HD-DVD paid Paramount and Dreamworks 150 million each to go HD-DVD exclusive over a year ago. If you think Sony is the only one paying them off your mistaken.

Re: Blu-Ray's big advantage?

I would say that the movie studios were making a huge mistake, but they don't care about consumers. So it's doesn't really matter to them. We're all getting screwed, though.

Well, you've guaranteed that you'll only get half screwed, then, anyway.

No one is getting completely screwed until the end of this year anyway. Universal is staying with HD-DVD for the time being.

What is your problem with Blu-Ray?

Re: Blu-Ray's big advantage?

That's excellent reasons for claiming that Blu-ray is ****. You don't like the name and it's expensive.

You know what's ****? The Toshiba HD-A30. It doesn't even pass Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD over HDMI. So much for getting HD Audio on your brand spanking new Receiver and HD Player. You have to pay the $300 dollars for the A35 to get what the PS3 offers for $399. The Toshiba HD-A35 doesn't play any games either. On top of that Blu-ray is dropping prices and the PS3 is up for another price cut as well.

Re: Blu-Ray's big advantage?

I just don't like it. Everything I have read about it, including the article that Mark posted, was that HD DVD is better for the consumer. I will tell you right now, I will not be buying a Blu-Gay player anytime in the near or distant future.

werd. love my buddies HTPC/home server setup. actually now he says he got his PS3 to interact with his server and thats now his HTPC, it can read all the media on his server and play it, and it has a rather nice UI by the looks of it.

Re: Blu-Ray's big advantage?

Blu-Ray is the superior format, and I for one am glad to see the customer is actually going to get to use that superior format this time around - as opposed to the Beta/VHS war from the 80's where the superior Beta format was tossed out because Sony wanted a fortune for the technology and the VHS tapes had longer record times.

For anyone who complains about Blu-Ray pricing.... please. Remember how pricey DVDs were when they first came out? Once things become mainstream you'll see the prices drop like a rock. Hell, there's already a few places here in Edmonton where I can get Blu-Ray movies for just a couple bucks more than a regular DVD movie.

With Blu-Ray being picked up by the majority of the movie industry right now, it's only a matter of time before HD-DVD gets shelved. I wouldn't be surprised to see it pretty much disappear by this time next year. I won't buy a player until it's a for sure thing, but I look forward to the day.
