Difference between 1080i and 720p

Ok I am thinking about getting a new TV and a PS3, and I want to know what the difference between getting a 720p vs. a 1080i. I want to see a side by side picture comparison to really understand what the difference is. Oh and does anyone know of any particular model I should get?

Re: Difference between 1080i and 720p

You mean 1080p? Not many new tvs are sold as 1080i.

I'd just go ahead and get a 1080p. You will be able to make use of your PS3 bluray.

Re: Difference between 1080i and 720p

I heard from a few people that unless you are getting up into the 50" range, the difference between 720 and 1080 is barely noticeable to anyone but a videophile. That's all hearsay though, I just watch TV on mine and 720p is plenty for

Well, 1080P offers a better image quality. I'd look into the 120hz TV's. You can get a Samsung from Amazon for 2200 now.

Re: Difference between 1080i and 720p

So like a 21in-30in wouldn't be all that noticeable? Interesting, thats another thing, what about the hz? Does that matter as well?

Re: Difference between 1080i and 720p

21-30in won't be noticable.

Newegg.com - SHARP AQUOS Black 46" 16:9 4ms 1080p LCD HDTV w/ ATSC Tuner & HDMI Model LC-46D62U

46" 1080p

TVs that aren't 120hz are the standard 60hz.

You're not going to find a 1080p TV in that price range.

Re: Difference between 1080i and 720p

That I know, but if the 720s dont look any good, I might as well just save for the 1080

Re: Difference between 1080i and 720p

They look good but they just aren't 1080P good. I told myself I wasn't going to buy a TV unless it was 37" or larger and 1080P. Just got to figure out what you want and see how long it will take to save for it.

Re: Difference between 1080i and 720p

1080i = 1080x720 resolution
1080p = 1920x1080 resolution

Yes 1080p is great picture quality, but unless all you do is watch Blu-Ray or HD-DVD movies, you're not going to get the benefits from it. Digital HD cable is broadcast in 1080i, so if you think your 1080p TV makes regular cable look like crap right now, it will get better with high-def cable, but you still won't have wicked picture quality because the broadcast isn't designed for that resolution.

In the end, it all comes down to what you use the TV for more: TV or movies. If you watch a lot of movies and really want to get the benefits of your Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player, I'd pick up a 1080p TV, but if you watch more TV and just the occasional movie, stick with the 1080i and save yourself a whack of cash.

Re: Difference between 1080i and 720p

If you do not plan to go larger than 37 inches 720p will work perfectly fine for you. Any bigger and you need to go 1080p.

1080i and 1080p are both the same resolution. 1080i is interlaced where 1080p is progressive.
