Re: The ol' Plane vs treadmill debate

K those videos kinda made me second guess my thinking.

I guess a plane would be able to overpower the treadmill with a propeller. Even though in those vids the wheels were motorized its still propulsion.

Best explanation yet. If this doesn't help people get it, I don't know what will.

The wheels on the plane go round and round, round and round, round and round. The wheels on the plane go round and round, round and round, round and round...

again... FAIL.

The plane doesn't have to overpower it... it makes NO difference.
Correct: I guess a plane would be able to MOVE on the treadmill with any form of engine that pushes air. (end of statement).

See, this is why it's great to have a plane... the treadmill could be moving 152,462 mph against the plane... and the only way the plane wouldn't be able to take off is if the wheel bearings burnt up and the wheels fell off.

*edit* and then the only reason it wouldn't be able to take off is because it would be laying on the ground... and the FRICTION of the airplane on the ground wouldn't allow it to get up to speed... I doubt the structural integrity would hold for that kind of action.

Re: The ol' Plane vs treadmill debate

Well that sucked, I don't think it proved anything one way or another. They proved that a plane could take off on a conveyer built (OMG FOR REAL IT WORKED?!?!?!), but didn't say anything about matching the conveyer's speed to that of the plane, which is the point of the myth IMO.

Re: The ol' Plane vs treadmill debate

What I think happened is when the wheels were on the tarp that section was not actually moving because of the weight of the plane. Because of this the wheels were actually rolling on the ground, causing the plane to take off.

Mythbusters sucks at making this experiment.

Re: The ol' Plane vs treadmill debate

Ok, so y'all are just debating now to debate and will have no actual valid points to make.

Take off speed was 25 mph....truck was going 25 mph...therefore, they matched it...and in fact, at the initial moment of planes movement forward they were exceding the planes speed so based on your argument the plane should have went backwards.

None the less, it was proven small scale and large scale. Now everyone can come out and debate very obscure points....but it will be for the sole purpose of debating.

I think they should've ramped that tarp up to 75 mph... really drive the point home.

You still can't prove the tarp was actually moving under the wheels...

BTW, I'm having so much fun messing with the guys on SVTP, I wouldn't be suprised if I end up with a ban after this lol.

They showed a shot of the speedo.....it was between 20-25 mph....the truck got to that speed quicker than the plane, so at some point the plane should have went backwards based on the comments being made around the net.

None the less, everyone is now trying to shoot holes in the test...yadda yadda. Even on the damn treadmill the mini plane moved forward from 0 mph to whatever it got to by the end of the treadmill. THe TM was going way faster than the plane at that point and it didn't go backwards but forwards when released.

It went forward just like it did on solid ground. Enough treadmill it takes off.

Why people can't grasp the concept that ground motion means nothing with planes....is beyond me...and any pilot that doesn't understand the physics of flying should immediately lose their license.

I've been reading it...that's why I'm not debating it anymore....people are going to just debate it to debate it now...

True stupidity never submits...hence the argument on SVTP right now.

It can't be fixed, corrected, or cured. It is terminal.

That's because all of our choices in politics are **** bags...so...there is no debate.

EDIT: Also, the media hasn't come in yet and told us what to think on this issue....so, it has to be debated.

Re: The ol' Plane vs treadmill debate

it doesnt have to fly to prove the point that the conveyor has little to no effect on the plane's ability to achieve forward momentum, forward momentum means airflow over/under the wings which means lift.

Nate your rollerblade on treadmill with rope pulling is an excellent metaphor, and one anybody with a treadmill and skates can do themselves in the comfort of their own home.

they should have had a high speed camera above the area where the plant was and then painted the area where the plan one going to be on the tarp with stripes so we could see it moving so people wouldnt talk about how it wasnt... that would have helped shut up some of them.
