HP's new mediasmart servers

Hear about them? They are servers that you have connected at home, you can store your photos, music, vids all onto this thing and you can access them from anywhere that has internet service. I bring this up because duh I work as a rep for them and because of this cool little feature

Pretty cool, but, I could do that with a bare bones machine running linux and be just as good. Still cool for the non overly geeky like myself.

Re: HP's new mediasmart servers

I need to find a better way to access my files outside of my network other than FTP.

Re: HP's new mediasmart servers

What I like about these home servers is you can pop in more hard drives into them. They have open bays, and depending on the ones you get will have 2 or more. And when you go to search for a file, you don't have to say G: drive or anything like that. It'll search all of it for you to find the file. Granted it might be slower on the search, but then you won't have to worry where's what.

Re: HP's new mediasmart servers

now would this replace my router?

I want a central server to store all my movies/music/pics on that all the PC's hook up to, and i can just access them from there. I know there is a way to set it all up with the router and **** like that but eh.

Naw it wouldn't replace your router. However, I know Linksys makes a router with a hard drive built into it so it'll act the same way.
