Gas Mileage Discussion

I know a few weeks ago there was a small discussion on what kind of mileage you can get out of an 03 cobra. So, this past weekend I took the time to write down mileage and fillups to see just what I get out of the new car.

Starting mileage: 27397.9 (Jackson, MS)
0.6 miles on tank
Fill up #1: 27710.4 (Birmingham, AL)
313.4 miles on tank
14.07 gallons = 22.2 mpg
Fill up #2 27976.8 (Hamilton, AL)
266.4 miles on tank
13.64 gallons - 19.53 mpg
Fill up #3 28257.5 (Jackson, MS)
274.7 miles on tank
13.578 gallons = 20.23 mpg

With the average fuel price being around 3.37 for Premium unleaded here I spend around 140 dollars to travel 855 miles, leaving me with a total of about 16 cents a mile to drive this car. Add in the cost of oil changes (25 bucks every 5k miles) gives me .5 cents per mile for that, leaving me at about 16.5 cents a mile to operate this car.

Not too shabby if I say so myself...

in my v6 mustang in PA with a bunch of hills (pittsburgh is really hilly) and almost 100% city driving i average around 20 mpg. on a PA highway trip (still with hills) i found out that i get about 23 mpg.

I average nearly 30 mpg, highway, in the 'vette. Around town, I usually get about 20. It's got 2.73 rear-end gears, though, which means it cruises real low in the RPMs on the interstate, and it has trouble getting out of it's own way from a stop.

Re: Gas Mileage Discussion

my car, 94 v6, used to get 25mpg in town, on highway, uphill, or down hill. I got new gears so I am not sure anymore.

Re: Gas Mileage Discussion

Is that running it down until the light comes on? I get about 20-22 mph highway, but I only get about 200-225 miles between fillups, but I don't run it down to fumes either. I fill up around 1/4 tank, or 1/8 at most.

Looking at the amount of each fillup, it appears you do run it about dry...and that is why your numbers appear inflated.

i get 30 on the freeway at 75 in 6th gear (almost idle)

but around town when i like to smoke cobras (no offense but i do love to) i get about 9-12 mpg. a programmer helped though. i keep it in economy when traveling.

mustang is my day to day driver since its actully good on gas. i see a mix of 17-20. the yukon with its big *** 360hp 6.0 get about 12 city- 14 highway (yes highway)

so i love the mustang as its makes alot of power (with a programmer) but has great fuel economy. but i fill up at 1/4th as i have always heard its bad to run down far as it sucks all the crap in the fuel tank to the engine (or filter but still its not good)

anyways

i shift at or before 2k

i go WOT only on onramps, and only when theres nobody in front of me so i can jaunt up to 80 and merge the correct way. once i get clear of people i usually drop down to 70-75 and hang out in either the middle or slow lane (if no trucks are in it)

I rarely even do the speed limit, my friends hate driving with me because i drive rather slow. I baby my cars most the times and only use them to their fullest on certain situations. just look in brents "Easy Listening" thread, thats usually whats playing in my car most the time, rarely is it anything else.

totally ricer driving style. dont you have a GLADD convention to go to?

Re: Gas Mileage Discussion

I'd be surprised if my car got 300 miles on a full tank.

And 3.37 for premium? It's 3.69 for regular unleaded here.

*permabans*

Hey man don't bash jersey because a small portion of the state has some oil refineries (Perth Amboy?) and one other small portion has all the rejects who can't afford to live in the Philadelphia slums (Camden, NJ)

No... The gay state is California, simply because you're living there. (Sorry haha I really could care less, but you had to go and bash jersey )

Sucks that I'll be out there all summer

The light only came on once and that was the first fillup. I wasn't gonna drive very far on what was left but you can ask tiffeny about the area we were in...it was gonna make it another 10 miles if I had to push it.

I filled up thursday and I'm down to 1/4 tank right now, sitting around 220 miles on the tank and I've been playing alot here recently. Just enjoying the weather with the top down.

Untuned, stock upper and lower, stock injectors, open filter, my 18's. I don't think I'm doing too bad.

Regular just went up to 3.19 here this weekend, it'll drop back down to 3.09 next week again like it always does.

Man the south is def cheap for everything.....im in sh** hole middle of no where PA and regular is $3.35 a gallon, I expect California to be expensive, they have the highest state tax on gas in the United States.

I'll go through a full tank in the truck tomorrow, should be somewhere around 90 bucks. Thankfully I don't get charged for it, just taxed on it.

It all depends on where you are though. I can go 2 blocks off the main drag and save 20 cents on gas here.

Re: Gas Mileage Discussion

so i got to 185mi before filling up today, i filled up just before my light was about to go on (that gas station i was about to pass was 3.95/gal for 91, and the farther i go from the city the more expensive it gets). so around 12gallons on that interval is what, like 15mpg?

sadly though that tank had mostly AC miles too (getting warmer here) so wtf, i get almost better mileage with the AC on? what type of conundrum bull**** is that?

I don't think I've ran A/C yet in my car lol...and to be honest, I don't think it makes a difference cruising with a/c on or off in these cars.

Re: Gas Mileage Discussion

you also have to remember he has a convertible, if the top was down that will mess up gas mileage. I need to check my gas mileage again, last time it was 19-20 with a 50/50 mix of city/hwy driving.. if I tried to check it now it would take me 2-3 months to go through a tank of gas.

Re: Gas Mileage Discussion

I've got a question though...Who cares?!?

It bugs the hell out of me when people talk about what kind of gas mileage they get out of a Mustang...who buys a Mustang expecting to get "good" gas mileage? I couldn't care less if it gets 4 mpg or 30 mpg, that's not why I have/drive/race the car...

I realize it's harder on the wallet with gas prices sky-rocketing daily, but if gas mileage really was that important that is needs it's OWN thread, we would all be driving around in honda civics, priuses, focuses, etc., and this forum would be called "EconoBox Evolution"...

My Mustang and F-150 both get awful gas mileage and will continue to get awful gas mileage, but as long as I am willing to pay for the gas, I don't really care...and if it's that big a deal for people, then sell the mustang and get a gas-saving car, that way you can shut up about your lack of gas mileage...

I do.

I want to know how he is getting almost 100mi more per tank than i am. sorry but at $4/Gal that **** adds up quick if you are only getting 150-17mpt (miles per tank) when some other guy is getting high 200's low 300mpt. I would like to know the secret, that amount i could save could go to more Jack n the Box tacos or whatnot. I want to know why all things being mostly equal, the outcome is not the same. Sure i have a few mods, but they only come into play under acceleration, not cruising speeds.

I think when the GSX is out of the garage the Cobra is gonna get a full inspection. Check compression, clean injectors, seafoam, change all fluids, wheel bearings, etc.

Re: Gas Mileage Discussion

there are alot of variables though.

weight of all the mods you add or change.

how heavy is your foot

year and condition of car.

what grade and quality of gas.

i use premium, have an easy foot with periods of flooring it in the mustang. i drive the mustang as a DD since its my most fuel efficent car. so depending on the day top may be up or down. my stang is in awsome condition. only mod i have made is a programmer and its set to economy most of the time.

i can see anyware from 16-22 mpg in a mix. but my gas for premium is only 3.20 so i dont really give a crap.

i use premium, have an easy foot with periods of flooring it in the mustang. i drive the mustang as a DD since its my most fuel efficent car. so depending on the day top may be up or down. my stang is in awsome condition. only mod i have made is a programmer and its set to economy most of the time.

i can see anyware from 16-22 mpg in a mix. but my gas for premium is only 3.20 so i dont really give a crap.

The thing is, with the exception of Tom Tom, those of us questioning it also have 03 cobra verts. I have nothing on my car to add weight over his car. I do have 60# injectors which will have some change.

However, further posting by Brad indicates that he is getting about the same as me as he had about 225 at a 1/4 tank...which is roughly where I end up depending on how many nice weather days we have. The 300 is from running it down a lot further than I even think of going.

Yeah in my mustang I dont really watch what mpg I get. I know its better then my explorer is but I also drive smart, dont go over 2000 rpm on take offs and let off when ur going to a stop. people get pissy but o well.

i used 100 gal of gas in the explorer in 4 days when I drove to oklahoma. my dads gt is getting 19mpg for a 5 speed v8./

Re: Gas Mileage Discussion

In my V6 it'd get around 260 with the 4.10 gears and less than awesome knocking engine.

i have a pulley swap, idlers, and a bassani cb. oh and a 10" punch sub and Qlogic box which you could manhandle with one arm, so maybe like 50lbs at most, and both my amps maybe 10-15lbs combined. Im a coupe and they are verts, so even worstcase i would be equal if not lighter.

aside from popular belief, its light. I rarely go over 2k to get moving, and the only time i go any faster is actual WOT jaunts.

Condition is great for the mileage, which is ~62k and some change, which is why im thinking on doing a full workover this summer and check everything out, stick it on my buddies lift and take a gander at everything under the sun. could be a great many things that should likely be replaced (rear end fluid, tranny, fuel filter, etc).
