Laptop advice.

So...I'm looking at replacing my 6 year old Dell this month with a new laptop.

What I'm looking for:

Under 5 pounds
Under a 14 inch screen
At least 4 gigs ram
At least a 2.4 GB/ 5MB Cache dual core processor

That's about all I have to have. I'm doing the software on the side so as long as I end up with either XP or Vista I'll be fine.

What I'm looking at:
Dell XPS M1330
Toshiba PortegeM700 Tablet PC

I've never had a tablet PC before but it looks like something I could use. I'm probably going to end up putting a mount in my truck and using this laptop for day to day operations at work including mobile broadband. I like the tablet PC idea for taking notes and doing quick things. But, I can also type fairly well with one hand, so it's not that big of a deal.

So..with that said, what do you guys recommend. And no mac. Just no.

Re: Laptop advice.

You already know my answer, HP makes great machines.

They have a 14 inch screen special edition HP. Comes with a 12 cell battery for extended life on it, and it's a pretty solid machine. They normally have it at Best Buy for cheap.

HP - Pavilion Special Edition Laptop with AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-62 - dv2845se

Normal price is 899, but it goes on sale regularly for 799

Tiff's HP has a problem eating a harddrive once a year. No HP for me. No gateway either. Too many problems.

If money isn't in the equation a Panasonic Toughbook is my recommendation. I have an older one (3 years old about) and love the hell out of the thing. Small, durable, and light.

HP's come bundled with heaping gobs of crap software. I just cleaned out a HP lappy for a coworker, took me an hour to get half the crap off there, gave up and stuck in my dandy Vista Ultimate and started from scratch. For the price the actual machine specs are pretty dam good. She got hers for like 470$, came with the 2.0ghz dual core, 8600m video, 15.4" glossy widescreen, 2gb ram, built in bluetooth and wirelessN iirc. it played BioShock on medium, which was pretty impressive for a lappy.

when I bought my HP from someone on here...

Step 1 - insert XP disc, reboot, install.
Step 2 - Create Ghost Image
Step 3 - Enjoy

thanks, Ill post some pics up later when my camera charges. Its a 2 part deal, so when I dont have my laptop I dont have to have the top part of the mount. took dad and I about 2 days to do it, (Built a mock up and then make the one thats in it now) I still need to get some shock pads and paint the bottom part so its not just plain stainless steal.

EDIT with photos.

Lets compare what you get for a macbook though

Starting at $1099 (Never goes on sale)

2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
120GB hard drive
Webcam
Basic Mac software included
1 year warranty, 1 phone call to tech support first 90 days. (wtf does apple not want to help people after 90 days?)

HP Clay Special Edition

Starting at $1149, but on sale now for $999

2.1ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
3GB memory
250GB hard drive
Webcam
Basic HP software included
1 year warranty, 24/7 phone support
12 cell battery included for extended battery life
Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS graphics card

I dunno, more bang for your buck is what I look for. That, and I don't really care to work on macs all that often. In the long run I'll probably get a Mac to store my photos and videos on while I work and game on my PC.

Ok, bought a new laptop tonight. What all should I install/update on this thing. It has service pack 1 already installed on 64 bit vista. Should have mozilla finished here in the next few minutes. What programs, etc... should I install to insure I don't screw this thing up.

It says something about special edition or something. I'm liking it so far...decent battery life, plenty fast. Like I say, just couldn't pass up the deal.
