Take it from me, you want that lock button. It's not essential really, but oh my god does it drive you nuts. I'd say it's a good deal if they're higher up in Memory/storage.

My i5 lock button stopped working after about the 600th time I dropped it, it's not essential but it does get to me at times..but these phones are built so nice no matter what anyone says, I work all types of construction, never had a case on my iphone 4, 4s, and now my 5, I have yet to crack a single one of them and I've dropped them all over 200 times easy lol..I got an android just for giggles right when I got rid of my iPhone 4S, and I cracked that supposed "gorilla glass" 2 times in ONE week..

Dang that sucks and I was thinking I could just jailbreak the phone download the activator app and make one of the volume buttons the lock button

Welp I ended up getting them and they're in pretty good condition if anyone's interested in a 3GS let me know haha and I was able to jailbreak and use activator to change the volume button to the lock and unlock button!
