Why svt stopped

It seems that after 2004 when SVT was on top of its game with the Lightning and the "Terminator" they seemed to just fade away. They went from producing the, IMO, best looking and performing mustang ever to making nothing in 2005. I just don't quite understand. Nothing was there to replace the 03-04 cobra. I guess im just not impressed with the s197, no offense, and want to purchase a 03-04 cobra but don't want my next car to be that old and more than likely well used. Any opinions or am I alone.

SVT is still around, they make Fords more awesome cars. The new GT500 that you order from Ford is pretty much made by SVT with Shelby's name stamped on it.

And that name carries a huge price. $50,000+ versus 33k in 04 which with inflation is still less than the shelby name. The gt500 just doesn't do it for me. I have driven several s197s and ended up buy a new edge model, which is neither here nor there. I just don't understand where they have been, or why they had no follow up for the 04 cobra.

Svt makes the raptor, boss mustangs, and gt500s and i think the cobra jet mustang? (May be wrong bout that one.) id say svt is more on their game than they have ever been and in my opinion one of the reasons ford has been kicking sommuch *** these past 2-3 years

---------- Post added at 04:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:50 PM ----------

And you have a point on prices, but the automotive market is different now than even that short time ago

Yes name does go a long way, the name Shelby has been around a while and people know more about Shelby than SVT... Before i joined this forum i didn't even know there was anything called SVT, but i sure as hell knew who Carroll Shelby was.

I guess im just frustrated with my lack of interest in the s197 model and the ever increasing rarity of the 03-04 cobra mustang and the also every increasing price tag on them.

+1 03-04 was svts best year IMO. But in 05 ford was in a bad spot and they knew they would sell alot of the s197 mustang because of the retro styling. Look at Chevy with the camaro they Stoped making them because they couldn't afford to make them and they just couldn't keep up with ford. Also the only reason ford didn't put IRS on the S197 is because it saved them alot of money. And don't forget svt makes the gt500 now.

I understand. You can find deals on low mileage stock terminators if you take your time. I've had a few friends buy pristine ones recently for high teens.

Call me crazy but i would take a lightning/termi over a raptor/gt500 any day. Basically my answer is like most things in USSA, the economy killed SVT. Also most cobras that are low miles are convertible...

You are crazy, the new GT500 is the badest car Ford has ever built.

The gt500s basically are cobras. Just like the guy above said they just stamped shelby on. And lightnings and raptors are built for very very different things lol. Svt also made the boss in the past few years, and its not uncommon for it to be considered the best mustang ever.

Did SVT do anything for ford in 05-06? That's the only 2 years unaccounted for.

SVT did the the ford gt and also the gt 500. Just cuz it says Shelby on it doesn't mean the didn't work on it. SVT as been around since 1993 and hasn't gone away. Any thing the mass produce that is performance, ford special vehicle team was responsible for.

---------- Post added at 01:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:41 PM ----------

That close but not it there were going To make a 4.6 supercharged thunderbird in 98 I believe but they had a 3.8 supercharger one that they did make.

Isn't that the supercoupe?
Ford Thunderbird (tenth generation) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thats what threw me off, you kept calling it thunderbird, i only knew it as the supercoupe. A lot of people say that crank is one of the best for the 3.8 engine

---------- Post added at 01:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:52 PM ----------

the Supercoupe isnt part of the SVT family though from what I'm reading

---------- Post added at 01:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:56 PM ----------

considering the Supercoupe was around in 89, its possible thats what sparked the SVT program
