Radom Question about plates

I notice that a lot of folks black, white out or do something to obscure their license plate(s). Why do folks do this?

Unless you have access to DMV records you can't rally gain any info from them? I know that some states you can narrow down counties, etc.

Just wondering. I just find it odd.

For 2 reasons. Some believe car theieves can locate your car based off of the plate numbers. The 2nd reason is if you're engaging illegal activity (street racing, reckless driving) the police have no way to identify it was your car.
