My friends dad actually won a little over a million ($1,018,000) on a hoosier lottery scratch-off around 1998-99. He took the lump sum (I think after taxes he made off with around $520,000), invested a third of it in high risk stocks (tech and pharm companies mostly), the other third in safer stocks and the rest into real estate (I was very curious about stocks and things around this time).
He continued to work at his job (manager at a cellular connection store), his wife worked in the deli at Meijer. Just this past summer they both retired and bought a house in Florida
. When we were helping them move, I asked how well he has done with his investments, he said he has made over 10x what he won and hasn't actually had to do anything to make that money.
He said it was amazing what a stock broker can do when they have a good lump sum of money to play with and a decent commission percentage.
