Anyone ever rent a vacation house?

I'll be traveling to the Virginia Beach area for a family Naval retirement shin dig later this year and I'm considering renting a house for the 5-7 days we will be there instead of a hotel. There seems to be a big selection nearby and close to the beach. Our posse will be between 7-10 people, so the house seems more appealing than 2 or 3 hotel rooms.
Has anyone else done this instead of a hotel? How did it work out for you?
Anyone have insight on Va Beach area and what to avoid?

I have done it several time through VRBO and like it. They are not always what they seem but read reviews and you should be fine.

We have done it every year for the last several years and have rented houses in Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Missouri. Usually through VRBO. Never had a problem thus far. Much better than a hotel in my opinion.

We've gone through both VRBO and rental agencies that run a lot of those beach rentals. VRBO tends to be a little cheaper, but we've been to a couple where the actual house is nothing like the listing and not in a good way. We've never had a bad experience going through one of the rental companies, but like I said they tend to be marginally more expensive.

Way better than a hotel for a prolonged stay IMO, if for no other reason than you're not having to go out for every meal.

hint: plan on simple food you can make with limited utensils. I tend to bring a cutting board, one good knife and a 12" fry pan. I have one place in VT we have been going to for 6+ years as once I find one I like I prefer to go with what I know. This one is just a cabin but it's one of only 3 on the lake. Read reviews and if several of them say the same thing that is what you get. Pictures can omit the fact it's next to ______. Remember to find out about Linens/Gas Grills/Microwaves/Coffee Makers/Washer/Dryers. Ask how close it is to the beach and what's between you and the beach (busy roads/town sewage plant) How close are the neighbors & parking

Done it twice in Key West and worked out great. I am doing it again for Mustang week next month. Use a site if worried as they are usually good about keeping people on the straight and narrow. I used craigslist for one and FlipKey for the other two
