Ah shizer. Well its going to be R9s for the holidays then or at least one.

Yes I have all my screens going to the primary and I have the adapters. I'll probably just run the center screen for my games until I can get the new video card(s).

Going to camp out at my computer all BF/CM weekend and hopefully Newegg/Tiger has a screaming good deal.

Yeah those are probably going to be the ones that go on sale too, at least I bet the 290s will. I do remember you saying the 390 was not fast enough to make use of the 8gb ram tho? How come the 390 is cheaper than the 290x?

The 290/290x (8GB), 390/390X and GTX 980 are all to slow to effectively use more than 4GB of frame buffer.

Now, that's not to say there aren't instances where having 5 or 6 GB of Vram might result in a better experience, because those scenarios do exist. However, in typical real world cases, the extra memory does absolutely nothing.

It's like a car that will only ever make 400 whp having a fuel system that will support 1,200+ whp. Just because you have it, doesn't mean you can use it effectively.

The 290/X and 390/X share the same exact GPU core. Same shaders, same everything except the standard 8GB of ram. The only real difference is that the 390's are generally better binned, which allows for a slightly higher base clock speed and slightly lower power usage. Also the 390's have 20 - 30% faster memory.

Every 290/X that I have owned will overclock to the same general limit as the 390/X do. So, essentially, they are just slightly overclocked 290's with more Vram.

The 290/X are no longer for sale through distribution channels. So essentially whatever is currently in stock is all that will ever be. The average person doesn't know that the 290 and 390 are the same card and can crossfire together. So basically, they are having a run on the last batch of stock for the 290's which is why the price has jumped up.

Just last week, newegg had 290's that were selling for $180 after MIR. That's just insane.

Ok so what exactly is better about the 290X over the 290? Sorry for the noob questions.

I mean I can read up online what it is on paper but IRL is it worth the extra $100 or so for the X or an extra $50-$70 for the 390?

I'm relying on you guys around Black Friday/cyber Monday to post up a good GPU deal. I tried playing Wildstar and it kept stuttering.

Its probably going to be one of the ones that Ish linked to. Last year the R9 270 went on a ridiculous fire sale at $100 a pop. If the 290 does the same thing this year I'm buying 2. I have the PSU to run it now.

If you guys need a new PSU, the Senteys on Amazon are very very very nice for the $$$. That is a legit 1000w supply for under $100 which is cray.

http://www.amazon.com/Mbp1000-hm-Aut...s=sentey+1000w

There are 750 and 850 options for cheaper too and if you aren't running a crossfired AMD setup you'll likely never need more than the 750. That said, you can also get a Corsair builder grade 600w for like $25 on sale on Newegg right now...

edit: Did some more researching. Apparently the R9 290 is a much better value for the money than the 290X. I think unless there is some sort of once in a lifetime deal I will be getting a 290 on CM or if they are cheap enough I might get 2. 2 of them should get me by for another 2 or 3 years like my 7850s did.

750w will be good unless you are getting 2 AMD cards. What brand PSU?

Seems like a good PSU.

I have that reference 290 that Ish linked to saved to my wishlist on Newegg. I'm praying to jeebus that they use BF/CM to clean out their stock of them. I don't care about the noise honestly but all the reviews say they get very loud and mega hot. Good thing I have 11 case fans lmao.

You guys think I have enough monitor now?

The foot of the mount I got is heavy and big but with three 24" monitors on it it was still a little tippy.

Luckily, the bottom of it has a bolt hole and they include a bigass bolt and flange so I did a little measuring and drilling and its now part of my desk.

The whole thing is actually super sturdy, I am very impressed by the quality of this thing. The cable management is making my OCD go nuts but I don't have long enough cables to do it properly right now. Will be waiting till I get my new video card to see exactly what all cables I will need to buy and then get them.

There are more video card deals on NE right now. Multiple 390s in the $275 range after rebate or one is $279 outright. Use the VCOBF15 (Visa Checkout Offer Black Friday 15) code as a one time use per account for an extra $25 off and just make a Visa checkout account and pay.

Or get a 290 for $75 less than that which is my current debate. Leaning toward a 290 and very not fond of Newegg having to charge tax to NJ residents... There is always Tiger...

Which card do you recommend for me? Not a huge PC gamer, but I love the high resolution. Should I upgrade from my 8gb of ram?

Ram is cheap right now, I would suggest going to 16GB (4x4GB). Also, try to get the same memory you already have. Then just load the XMP profile from the bios for the ram and it will set it's own speeds and timings.

If you are still rocking a 660Ti, then I would recommend anything from a GTX 970 - R9 290/390 and up, unless you can hold off till next year.

So essentially, GTX970, GTX 980, GTX 980Ti on the Nvidia side or R9 290/390 or X versions, Fury or Fury X.

As for how the cards stack up, all of them listed will generally be at least twice as fast as your current 660Ti.

The order of the cards is: GTX 970>R9 290/390>R9 290X/390X=GTX 980>AMD Fury>Fury X=GTX980Ti.

Also, AMD just cut prices across their line - AMD Cuts All GPU Prices Including R9 Fury X, Fury And Nano - Down To As Low As $569, $499 And $549 Respectively

Looks like 390X and 390 will be down to $379 & $279 – $359 & $259 after mail in rebate.

Fury cards dropped from $550 to $499 and Fury X dropped from $650 to $569 after MIR.

The real thing to keep in mind is that the new GPU's dropping in 2016 are going to be massive upgrades to what we have now. With HBM 2 memory and the die shrink, down to 14/16nm, the PC industry hasn't seen this kind of jump in performance since late 2007.

Supposedly, the flagship GPU's coming out are going to be good for 2-5x faster depending on the workload. So essentially, it would take two of the fastest GPU's (with 100% scaling) to equal the performance of a flagship single GPU from the next gen.... and that's on the low end of the scale.

I have half a mind to wait till next year as well and just run my games in single monitor mode with my crossfired HD7850s and hope Bethesda or a modder releases a solution for Fallout 4 and play the rest on medium/high resolution.

The Reference 290s are $175 after rebates on Newegg right now... but...

That is a Reference 290 making your GPU sound like an APU.

For $29 more there is this one.

HIS iPower IceQ X OC Radeon R9 290 DirectX 11.2 H290QMC4GD 4GB 512-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Video Card - Newegg.com

That said, if the Reference cards drop to really cheap...

I actually got a BUNCH of stuff on Steam for like... no monies...

-Witcher 3
-Wither 3 DLC Hearts of Stone
-Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion
-Wolfenstien The New Order
-Counter Strike Global Offensive
-Elite Dangerous
-Shadow of Mordor

For $97... Steam is having a massive massive massive sale. Even if I can't score a good deal on a 290 my crossfired HD7850s will do a lot of these games at high/ultra and I can probably get a decent setup in Mordor and Witcher 3 on a single monitor... I hope...

I am not opposed to using FXAA for my anti-aliasing needs since I have a pretty beastly CPU now. I am able to get a really REALLY good looking modded Skyrim using FXAA and good framerates too.

So, Mordor runs ok on one monitor on medium settings. Have not tried Witcher 3, the last Wolfenstein patch busted Eyefinity but I can play at high on one screen with that, the rest of them play fine. Amazingly, Elite Dangerous is smooth on 3 screens but its not a true 5760x1080p resolution and its not graphically intense so there is that...

Playing ED with a HOTAS on 3 screens completely validates why I PC game vs console tho. I have no words to describe how great it is.

I am going to do a GPU upgrade tho, probably will buy one this afternoon once I see if any CM sales drop. Water cooled 290 here I come.

Responded. I would not buy a used SSD to be totally honest unless I REALLY trusted the person and knew how old it was.

Heh... I've been going through this and picking ISH's brain about it for like a month lol.

What card is that and are you gaming on a single or multi monitors? What resolution? What are the rest of your setup? I see you have a water cooler too so I'm assuming its something slightly speedy lol.

Budget?

I'm guessing your motherboard is an Asus Z77 and it looks like an EVGA video card, which means it's Nvidia. Going by the SFF (small form factor) and single 6 pin, I'm guessing a GT 740 or 750 Ti.

If it's a 740, you are looking at AMD 7750 / R7 250 levels of performance. Solid upgrades are available.

If your card is a 750 Ti, it's a few jumps up the ranks with performance on the same level as AMD 7790, R7 260X or GTX 660.

Like Scotty mentioned, tell us the specs on your computer (ram, CPU), what resolution you play at, what games you play, what you expect and how much you want to spend.

As for buying a used SSD. Don't, unless you know the person. SSD's only have a limited number of write/rewrites before they fail. You could buy from someone who never had trim enabled by their OS and ran a defrags on it. Either of those can seriously shorten the life spans of the drive. Also, the first and second gen SSD's were junk, especially the ones with Sandforce controllers. The first and second gen Sandforce based SSD's won't even boot on newer systems. Those are from 2011 - 2012.

Ish can pick out computer components at first glance like my dad can tell exactly what year any Chevy/Ford/Mopar is from 1955 thru 1974 just by looking at it from across the parking lot... lol.

And in WIndows 10, TRIM for SSDs should be enabled by default but no guarantees. SSDs are also so damn cheap new even for bigger capacities that buying used is just not really going to save any $$$. I find that a 256GB unit is all that is needed for a dedicated gaming drive.

240 - 256 GB SSD are going for around $60 - $75. 120 - 128 GB are around $40. No matter which new SSD you go with it will drop boot times or load times significantly.

Damn that's good but the deals on the 290s and 390s were similar all BF weekend and it wasn't an instant sellout. The HIS 290s with the big Frozr style coolers (that I linked to in post 126) on them were $198 for a solid 24+ hours during the Visa promo. And they have more VRAM. That was honestly probably THE best deal on the site as far as video cards go over the weekend. Only reason I didn't buy one is because I am stupid.

I forget what sort of monitor setup you have again. Single setup? Resolution?

Also you can set alert prices on items you are really interested in. I currently have the Reference 290 set for $200 and the Powercolor 390 set for $260. Just setup your phone with gmail to have a specific noise for newegg emails if you want to know asap if the part you want is at your price point.

And also if you have a student email you can currently get a free year of Newegg Premier. I just found out about that and used my wife's email to get a free year.
