Also now Win10 is not activated because the key was stored in the mobo. I guess its a good thing I didn't get all my Skyrim mods loaded yet lol. Blah. Will redo it all tomorrow. So glad all my games are now loaded to Steam, Battle Net or Origin...

While I don't know a whole bunch about computers I picked up a Lenovo edge 15 over the weekend with the latest generation i3 quad core processor and a terabyte hard drive for $399. Came with 8gb of ram installed and I just ordered 16gb of Gskill ripjaw ram as an upgrade. 1600mhz 1.35v and cl of 11.

That'll be a real good laptop. Does it have a second hard drive slot? Video card? I'm guessing Intel HD graphics and no for $399 but that's such a good price.

I don't think it has a second HD slot. I have no idea about the video card. I got it for school work and I think it was the Best Buy at the time.

I did their promo code for the free 3 month subscription to their premier thing. So I got free shipping. This is probably the only time I'll use it. Lol

I get it free for a year because of a student email. I also live an hour from a distribution center. If I ever had a wild hair up my *** I could use will call but I can place an order and if its a weekday and it ships from Edison, NJ it comes the next day. The bad part is I have to pay tax... Its still cheaper than Tiger. Sometimes Amazon is cheaper tho. That's another place to look for computers/computer parts. I got my NZXT water cooling bracket for my video card for $20 cheaper and free shipping on Amazon.

Yea I took a look at Amazon before I bought from NE. I didn't find it cheaper. And I didn't know they gave it to you for a year with a student email. I could do that as well I suppose.

I'm just happy to be back up and running on W10. Going to make an image of this thing I think... Having to load my copy of 8 Pro, then install 160 updates to it can take the 8.1 upgrade so THEN it can take the Win10 upgrade is very tedious.

Only thing I have left is to put the JetFlo fans back onto my CPU cooler and then see how high I can take this sucker. I've already got it to post at 5.0 and 5.2 easy with the new motherboard but the 90 cfm fans are not cutting it.

If anyone is ever looking for parts for a PC, go to Pick Parts, Build Your PC, Compare and Share - PCPartPicker

You search what parts, where from, rebates, shipping, etc.. to find the best price for exactly what you are looking for.

Also Scotty, https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexp...w-build-10565/

Don't mind the insider preview stuff, its also on the full iso.

"Device activation improvements: We have received a lot of feedback from Insiders on making it easier to activate Windows 10 on devices that take advantage of the free upgrade offer to genuine Windows by using existing Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product keys. If you install this build of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on a PC and it doesn’t automatically activate, you can enter the product key from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 used to activate the prior Windows version on the same device to activate Windows 10 by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation and selecting Change Product Key. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 by booting off the media, you can also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup. Refer to the Insider Hub for more information on these activation improvements including requirements."

Good to see that 5.2 Ghz is booting. Have you received you CM water cooler back yet or still using the 212?

I never RMA'd the cooler. Almost blew out the aluminum threads on the H50 for my GPU cooler using literally no pressure with the screwdriver. Just got it snug and that's it. Seems to be doing ok... They are not like that Zalman where they are smart enough to put a metal threading in for the screw. Its like 4 threads of aluminum and that's it. Figured I'd just break it again. Small zip ties attach the fans just fine nice and secure and I hang the whole thing by the top fan.

But the Hyperboreas don't have the static pressure or CFM to keep the core temps from going over 70C. The good news is those 3 50mm fans on the way bigger VRM heatsink of this board seem to have my socket temps under control for the first time ever. The JetFlos do something like 150cfm at full blast and I forget the static pressure but its fantastic so we will see. I got it stable at 5.0ghz under the old setup with the core topping out at 66C. With a little better cooling and a much better mobo and the socket not getting hotter than the surface of the sun I'm thinking 5.2 is attainable. It for sure will be in P95 if not IBT.

Also nobody believes me on OC.net that I'm getting the numbers I am lol. Those guys are kind of elitist pricks over there. There is some good info for sure but if you are getting good numbers and not running some sort of custom loop or extreme cooling its like you are talking smack about someone's mom.

I was able to quiet both JetFlos down plugging them directly into power and hitting them with some dry lube. Going to strap them back onto it tonight or tomorrow and fire it up and see what happens.

Haha.. good call on overclock.net. some of those guys absolutely know their stuff and are a bit elitest. Moat literally only know what they seen on youtube or read somewhere and use it as a bible.

I stopped posting over there a few years ago because the community went to crap and i got into it with one of the mods and they ended my account pretty quickly.

If you got a decent board, I'm guessing 5.2 will be possible with no throttling. 5.4 will likely be stable enough for extreme benching.

I'm waiting for AMD Vega or more info on GP102 (1080ti or 1000 series Titan). Also, there is no way in hell I would buy a reference 1080 at that price point. Wait a few months for the board partners to release their custom pcb's. The reference cards (founders edition) are throttling with the stock cooler and also running into a power limit when overclocking.

Another thing, in some cases, even an r9 290x is faster than the 1080 in dx12. While Nvidia improved async compute with Pascal, it's still not at the same level AMD was at a few years ago.

All of that overclocking stuff is way over my head. Is it something you have to physically do? Or does it overclock as needed?

You basically set a power and thermal limit and it will boost up to that limit. Once either power or thermal limits are hit, the card will start scaling back until it finds an equilibrium.

There is a little more to it than that with boost frequencies and a few other things.

The issue is that the reference card or as Nvidia calls it, the founders edition, is that the power limits and cooling solution aren't able to keep everything in check. Once the AIBs start making their own custom PCB's the 1080 will be a much, much better card.

In car terms, it's like overboost that some cars offer. It will make more power for X amount of time before throttling back down to normal mode due to cooling or fuel delivery becoming an issue.

I used the settings ISH sent me for my single 290 (not the X) with water cooling and I crush Skyrim on 3 1080p screens and max out graphics on all the newest stuff on a single still and the core never gets above 90C.

I would not waste my money. If anything, I'll do a custom loop and get that final 400mhz out of my processor and add another 290 under water in a crossfire.

Try looking in the bios for any usb settings. Or just reset the CMOS and try again. Or use the ancient tech that is a CD if they still have opticals. Lmk if you need any OS ISOs. I have a nice self activating copy of 7 Ultimate Black.

Was the USB drive formatted as a bootable device or was an ISO or something just copied over?

If it is a bootable device, you will have to select it in your bios. If you have the option for quickboot, select it and then select the USB device. If that doesn't work or you don't have that option, you can go into the bios and select boot order and make either USB or the name of the USB device the first bootable device.

Another issue you might have is if it is a store bought computer. Most of those have the UEFI locked down to only boot from the OS drive.

If this is the case, you will have to figure out how to get into the bios, once in the bios, you can change the boot order. If you do this and it makes no difference, you will have to disable safe boot / secure boot. Again, the naming and where it is located will be different between manufacturers.

Once that is done, the system will boot to whatever device is the highest priority.

Likely a driver issue there, I have that happen at work if I try to use one of our ergonomic keyboards to key it into the bios it won't detect. I keep a basic $5 USB keyboard on a shelf for those computers. I re image a ton at work because we have so many users and the drives just get overloaded with profiles. Scary how most ppl think it's some sort of black magic lol.

So as far as pc gaming is concerned what would be the recommendation for a keyboard? Also does the mouse pad make a difference?

I love my razor black widow. I haven't noticed a difference when changing around mouse pads.

Some ppl use omfg wtf bbq expensive mechanical keyboards. I get by just fine with a microsoft backlit gaming keyboard. I'm not a "serious" gamer tho lol. Also do just fine with a $20 Gigabyte gaming mouse. Some ppl have like $500 into their setups with keyboard, crazy mouse, other **** and a scuf controller.
