87 Octane will reportedely drop to $1/gal by the end of 2016

Just read this from a few different sources. Economy has recovered from the recession as well as increased domestic oil production and higher MPG vehicles is forcing foreign oil exporters to sell to other buyers.

Gas prices could drop toward $1 a gallon

That's just one article. It's already close to the $1.50 range paying cash here at some stations for 87.

Huzzah!

I filled up in South Carolina yesterday for 1.59 a gallon. Definitely a nice change.

It might in some places but others could already be as close to rock bottom as it will get with taxes. Hell some places around here 87 is the only thing dropping, the gap between 87 and 93 at some places is a full $1 a gallon.

I feel you there. I run a 91 octane tune and I'm still well over the price of diesel here in Kansas while 87 just keeps dropping.

I paid 2.23 for 93 last fill up. Diesel is at 1.99. Regular 87 is 1.73.

Its $1.73 for 87 and $2.19 for 93 around here now. Diesel is $1.79. Its still going to fall. I'd expect 93 to bottom out around the $1.50-$1.75 range in the states with the cheapest gas. California will keep paying $4/gal.

It's ok for California to pay $4 a gallon. They don't buy much gas anymore. They have the most fuel efficient cars and the lowest emissions. No big deal for them.

I wouldn't say there's an increase in domestic the Oil is a bust right now. So many workers have lost there jobs and companies either closed shop or downsized to nothing. Like two days ago a barrel was going for 36.10

Its $34/barrel now. I mean it sucks... and I know we have ppl on this forum who work in the industry but it is dying industry or at least there will come a point where we are on more and more green energy than anything which is a good thing. Those who can adapt will take on the new energy industry and thrive. I dunno.

I mean hell give it another 5 years and a 500+ mile range electric will be affordable for a LOT of ppl and the Tesla charging station network will be a lot more robust. You can already go cross country or up and down both coasts in a Tesla.

That's a good price for a remote little California town that nobody has ever heard of!

Haha.
You aren't that far off!
The last time that I bought gas, 87 octane was $2.30ish. I read an article that the prices are likely to rise a bit in CA due to some "unscheduled" refinery maintenance in the state.

We have the same cars that can be purchased in any state in the USA.
Contrary to popular belief, a lot of fuel gets burned in this state. California is a big state and many people have very long commutes.

A different engineering firm that I previously worked for had to lay off a few guys because of the dropping crude oil prices. That firm supplied design, and on site engineering services to companies in the Marcellus Shale industry, so I saw this gradually comming before it really hit mainstream. Since I was the most recent hire, I got laid off. But, I'll take the cheaper gas prices any day of the week. I got another job at a firm I worked for in the past, but I know some others in this industry weren't so lucky. I'm pretty fortunate.

Now all that Telsa needs to do is make their cars affordable to the general public. 100K they are asking for their Roadster buys a nice gas burning car, with lots of pocket change to pay for that fuel.
I'm all for alternate fuels, and would have one in my driveway if it could do a couple of things:
1) Be cost efficient
2) Have a decent range
3) Have charging stations readily available
4) Tow my camper

Are there any refineries in LA or do you guys have to have it all piped in from Canada? I guess that's the good thing about having all the refineries up by NYC, gas is stupid cheap here.

I realize that and have lived in Cali. I was stationed there from 09-12. It was a joke. I know y'all have the same cars. But they aren't the same tune or engine components in some cases. I know there is a lot of highway driving there. Just a joke.
Hell, I was there when gas was $5 a gallon for regular off base and on base it was $4.

I'll enjoy this low price bubble as long as it lasts, which I doubt will be very long.

My understanding is that OPEC is in part keeping production high to drive their international competition (i.e. the US) out of business. Once that's done, I have no doubt that they'll slash production and bring up oil prices, making all those folks who bought Hummers for Christmas rethink their choice.

Nope, Saudi Arabia has all but killed the OPEC cartel by keeping production high. They've had to cut a bunch of stuff out of their budget for 2016 because of reduced oil revenues. The USA is starting to get off foreign oil and the results are showing.

Not quite nope...we're both at least partially correct: Opec bid to kill off US shale sends oil price down to 2009 low | Business | The Guardian.

Basically it's a Mexican stand-off between SA, OPEC, and the USA. Result: oil prices aren't going to stay this low forever.

Yeah that's how it started in 2009 but they've kept the volume up coupled with less demand here and other buyers coming into play. Also the massive Iranian oil supply is coming into the market as well and they'll be chief exporters as long as they don't try anything as far as going back on the nuke deal they signed.

I'm loving it at the moment. Landscape industry and we average 1500 gallons of gas and 800 gallons of diesel a week.

Taking the profit while it's available.

Nope. I had to Google it.

A couple of years ago, I spent a day driving around, mostly, in Siskiyou county and almost ran my Mustang out of gas because of the lack of traditional filling stations. It seemed that a lot of communities in that area rely on those card lock stations.

Apparently it was 78 cents in Michigan somewhere today. Well that escalated quickly...
