Any guesses as to what the original AC Cobra is going to sell for?

I saw this car at the Shelby Museum, and Shelby's family still owns it. This is the very first AC Cobra that Carroll used to generate investor interest so he could build others. He even painted it about four times in different colors so that investors would think there was more than one!!!
The interior is literally falling apart, with the stuffing coming out of the seats. And, I think it was such an early example, it has the 260 cubic inch V8 in it instead of the 289 the production models later had.
The family has turned down 25 Million (!!) dollars for it, but it is going under the hammer in late August at Sotheby's, I think. The proceeds are going to go toward childhood welfare in accordance with Shelby's will.
I am guessing mid $30,000,000 (that is a LOT of 0's!).....will be one of the most interesting cars to come up for auction in a long time though.....

I wonder how much Jay Leno's going to bid...he'd probably be all over that.

At $25,000,000 PLUS.............I don't think that even Leno could write that check...........It will be interesting to see who bids, and the family may regret turning down the $25 million...........

I'll gladly trade my base model V6 for it. More HP, better shape, nicer interior, AC, stereo etc.

People aren't really paying for a car in this case. More of the history and what it represents.

That is true, and the documentation on this car is flawless. You can even see some of the other colors he painted this one under the blue it now is.
Carroll Shelby was an icon and quite a character, so the story behind this car, and what would become of the marque also adds value. What would folks pay for the very first Ferrari, or the very first serial number of many automobiles?
Seeing as 427 AC Cobras with low miles routinely go for over a million, I can see the inspirational, original selling for many times that amount....but 25 or 30 times as much? We'll have to see.

I'd say 26 million. Doesn't matter if it's in bad shape. It's the beginning of the legend.
It'd be interesting to see if it gets close to GTO prices.

Its not what the car is worth, its bragging rights and because its the only example of it in the world.

Some Billionaire will have an agent there with basically a blank check. Hopefully it stays in the USA but it very well could be some Prince or King or Sultan of some country overseas.

I was hoping for the same thing. Such a USA icon needs to stay here......but the dollars paid for it sure will -- and benefitting children too will be a nice thing.

$25 million = $35K for a replica, 6 million for two lakefront estates and way more $ than I would ever need.

There you go!

While the Cobra itself is a beautiful machine, no vehicle can be worth that kind of money. Just a bunch of rich folks with nothing better to do with their money. This puts any of us owning a vehicle like that waaay out of our reach.

Yeah that's you. When you are talking about ppl who literally have more money than they could ever spend and already have like a dozen lakefront estates its not the same for them. There is only one of these cars, cannot buy another one if this one gets away. That's why it'll go for the price its going to go for.

I agree....

The person who may buy this Cobra is like this:

His wife wears one piece of jewelry worth twice what your house is worth.
Keep in mind that a billion dollars is a thousand, thousand, thousand.......
So, he thinks of a million dollars exactly as you would a thousand. So, $35,000 for a car? Easy!
You ask your wife, where do you want to go to dinner? He asks, which country to you want to have dinner in?
Keep in mind that the La Ferrari was (I think) only offered for sale to those who already owned 9 Ferraris.

And, there is only one for sale. There's got to be more than one insanely rich car enthusiast/investor interested in this Cobra. Let the bidding war begin!

Like my dad tells my mom when he buys another toy:
- I can't take it with me;
- any $ that I spend, I will get back from interest on what's in the bank;
- nobody tells me how to spend my money.

Hopefully, the car will be purchased by someone who will leave it in it's current condition, and, possibly, display it at an automobile museum of some sort.

Or drive it like they stole it. I'm guessing that's what Carroll Shelby intended them all for.

I wonder how many miles are on this original one.......or if the odometer even works any more.....I was surprised at the condition of the interior, with the seats all ripped up and the padding and stuffing puffed out of the rips. I guess any car is only "original" once, and this one sure is!

To some people $25 million is chump change. Its an absurd amount for all of us, but there are definitely people out there that would be willing to pay it.

IIRC the original has 400k miles on it or something. Dude drove it EVERYWHERE and every day. Down in Vegas it was never not a good day to drive that car.

As it should be with any sports car. I'm the guy that will arrive to your house to buy your pristine Mustang with low mileage, kept in the garage on ugly weather days. I'll be there to pick it up on a foul rainy day, and drive off.
