Green energy IS cost effective now (sarcasm)

Just more proof that you can't just pull the plug on coal plants today and bring up wind and solar tomorrow:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,423850,00.html

Quote:
Energy Balls currently are sold in sizes of either 1 meter or 2 meters in diameter. They can be installed on a pole or a flat roof in as few as four hours, Aurik said.

In places where the wind is relatively strong — blowing 15 mph, or 7 meters per second, on average — a 1-meter ball can generate up to 500 kilowatt-hours per year, while the 2-meter ball can supply 1,750 kilowatt-hours per year.

The typical U.S. household uses 11,000 kilowatt-hours per year, so additional electricity will have to come from somewhere.

However, these are optimum values that assume the small turbine is mounted at least 40 feet (12 meters) above the ground and is free from surrounding trees and buildings that block the wind.

The cost of the Energy Ball is between $3,500 and $7,000, not including installation.
So, assuming you buy the $7000, 2 meter unit, and live in a flat area with 0 trees and have a constant wind speed of 15 mph you save 16% in energy a year (1750 kWh/11000 kWh)

Assuming 10c/kWh, you save $175 per year, giving you a payback of 40 years, assuming you bought the windmill with cash and had it installed for free. Also neglect electricity rate increases, time value of money, etc just to make it simple.

Definitely cost effective.....maybe this technology will mature....or maybe these idiots will look at nukes!

all those techies in silicon valley have solar energy - and besides having to clean them off every once and a while, they work fantastic... but keep in mind thats a pretty sunny area.

it just takes time to work through it... you can not just stop over night and do something else as some of these idiots think you can... if we suddenly stopped burning coal/using gas/etc the world would nearly fall apart.

what we need is, a big fan, and like 10 wind generators, in a room, and like, the fan would blow the generators, which would produce power, but we'd have to make them efficient enough that you have surplus energy and then its a perputual energy producin' machine yessir *patent pending*
