I have been involved in the interview process where I work, and GPA is definitely something we look at. It is a great indicator of A) how well someone understands the material they studied and B) how willing they are to work hard. I can assure you that candidates with a 3.8+ GPA are going to stand out above others.
I guess it depends on the field you are in.
