It's got a HEMI!!!

Anyone getting tired of the hype on the new Dodges? I really do like Hemi motors but this is all just hype, the power is similar among the domestic trucks. I'll post stats in a min.

I don't call it a Hemi since it has 16 spark plugs and its not painted orange.

A lot of HP... but it's a shame that it's not going into making that car fast. Definately a powerful beast tho!

Re: It's got a HEMI!!!

The Focus is more of a 'hemi' than the modern "hemi" which is an oblique crescent at best. It has two plugs just to get it to pass emissions. It's effectively a big, prehistric, pushrod V8 with none of the finesse of the pushrod GM LS7 or the excellence of the Ford DOHC modulars.

The old Hemi was ahead of its time -- the new one was designed just to capitalize on marketing the name "hemi" to those who don't know any better.

Apparently that worked so well that Ford has decided to brand engines again (Boss). At least the new Hurricane/Boss will be technologically advanced, efficient, and very clean too.

It's just a matter of time before OHCs are recognized for their true excellence -- Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maseratti, Formula-1, etc., have known this for a log time. At least I'm glad that Ford was the first volume producer to commit to the benefits of OHCs -- the others will eventually follow, IMO. Some, apparently, kicking and screaming.

I find it annoying that the 5.0 modular boyracer could enter the GrandAm and win its tripple crown the first year, kicking Porsche, BMW (and everyone ele's) butts. So, once again, excellence is rewarded with restrictions: no gears bigger than 3.55 for the Fords (everyone else has no restriction), 70% restrictor plate on the inteke (everyone else has no restriction) -- and the boyracers were, amazingly, still was cometitive, but did not win. So Dan Davis did the manracer with some 25-plus% more horsepower to overcome the restrictions.

Ford's engine excellence goes back decades. In their day, the SOHC427 and Boss429 were exceptional -- so good in fact that they were banned from many forms of motor racing, including NASCAR and NHRA Pro Stock, among others. Let's hope Ford has done their 'political' homework on the coming H/Boss.

I, for one, would like to see excellence be rewarded with 'wins' rather than hanstrung artificially for the benefit of inferior engineering -- so that no one manufacturer can truly dominate. That's sad because it dis-incents excellence and rewards mediocrity -- the currect Hemi being the poster child of insipid, mediocre, name-driven design.

Let's hope the world can change and rekindle true excitement in motor sports -- excitement based on engineering excellence and dogged team determination... one of the reasons Ford + Shelby = Success in the 60s

<end of soap box>

-Dan

Because there's comments he wants to make. Seems useful to put the comments in context.

I for one have no issue with bringing up old threads, ESPECIALLY IN THE BAR

Re: It's got a HEMI!!!

great post 68fastback... thats exactly what I wanted to say about the new "hemi"

personally I don't see anything about it at all that makes it a "hemi"
I think its a disgrace to the still holding champion performance engine of all time.
the 426 HEMI...

Yeah, the old hemi was a beast! Forced Ford to do the SOHC427 to beat it in NASCAR -- until NASCAR pulled it. I think Richard Petty had a lot of clout back then

In Pro Stock, even after NHRA banned the SOHC427, Bob Glidden went on to eventually win 10 season championships but, eventually, without Ford support he succumbed to Warren Johnson (and a heart attack). Gliden is back in Pro Stock now again -- running a GM team.

Sure would be great if Ford ever did decide to get back into ProStock, if they could lure Bob back -- as unlikely as that is.

PS -- hope I didn't upset anyone with the new Hemi post... just wanted to vent, I guess

FYI
The 427 SOHC was banned by Nascar(Bill France) before it ever ran a race, forcing Ford to further develop the 427 wedge with tunnel port heads. While still winning some races Ford was developing their own HEMI,the Boss 429.
The rules stated that at least 500 street cars had to be produced with an engine to qualify for Nascar and Ford began building the Boss 429 Mustang in Jan.of 1969,and at the same time making the slippery Talladaga Torino body streamlined for the Nascar wars.
At the first race of the 69 season(March I believe)Bill France said that Ford had not produced the required 500 cars and the Ford teams quickly removed the Boss 429 engines and put the 427 tunnel ports back in.Combined with the slippery new Torino they won anyway. At the next race the Boss 429's were fully qualified and the winningest season for Ford took off.
The Boss 429 was so strong that King Richard Petty defected from Chrysler for a year and drove for one of the Mercury teams with the Boss 429.
Also,Bob Glidden ran Boss 429's,not SOHC 427's,and was very successful with them as well as his later small block Pro Stock cars.
It's all in the history books.

Re: It's got a HEMI!!!

Thanks, 69Boss429... great info!

I didn't realize Glidden ran the Boss 429 in ProStock -- great info! I didn't mean to imply Glidden ever ran the SOHC427 in NHRA as it was banned from the outset in ProStock (I think). Sweet pix too.. thanks.

I remember when Connie Kalitta ran a SOHC427 in his rail... and later a Boss429. I think both were called Bounty Hunter at one time or other.

They were indeed named the Bounty Hunter.
His son Doug was runnerup in Top Fuel this year at Pomona.
The late Mickey Thompson also ran cammer's and Boss 429's in his Funny cars.
Those were the days!

Yeah, I watch NHRA on ESPN2 here in the northeast. I've always liked Kalitta -- was always amazed how he (when he was younger) was ableto fly a plane and drive with one bad eye... amazing guy ..amazing family.

Sometimes it's a scarily small world. When I moved from Queens NY to upstate in 1974, the moving company (major national mover) sent 4 guys to pack and move us -- one was Micky Thompson's son!!!

I had an '68 Intermecchanica Italia Torino at the time (hi-po 302 powered 2400lb aluminum-bodies Ferrari-like two-seater) and when he saw it he told me who he was. A windshield I had ordered from Italy for the Italia came packed in a handmade oak chest that I had saved -- it was huge, so I offered to Thompson, Jr.

In return he sent me an invitation to come out to the family ranch (somewhere out west, canl't remember exactly where now). I never took him up on it but we'd talk occasionally. Eventually we fell out of touch, but he was a outgoing, goodnatured peson like his dad.

Those were the days! When you could buy a used 4-yr old 427 Cobra for $4-6K (depending on whether it was just gorgeous or abosolutely like new!). 12-15 years later they were already doing for three times their new price -- the rest is history!

Damn, I miss the days before radar when the police had 6-cyl Plymouths with a huge speedometer mounted on top of the dash -- and had to actually catch you to give you a ticket !<lol>

Those truly were the days!

<edit:> 69Boss, whereabouts are you from? The backround in your Boss pic looks east, but..?
