Major relief

I finally decided to smog my car here in California (I moved from PA). I have a pypes catted x-pipe and the cats are so small. I couldn't believe it but I passed...barely. I was tested under federal standards instead of Cali's thank god. HC were 82 ppm and 48 at 15 and 25 mph. Max was 84 and 49 haha. The co was very low .07 and .04, .49 and .46 were max but the Nox was close as well. 633 ppm and 590 ppm at 15 and 25 mph. Max was 692 and 711. The guy was like you may need new cats soon, I just laughed. One less thing off my back to do, now I just need to switch over insurance and register her, more money. Also, I paid her off last week so she is offically all mine, woohoo!

Re: Major relief

My car didn't pass MD state inspection because their ECM reader was blocked by my aftermarket tune since I have the O2 sensors turned off. As an alternative to retesting, I was forced to show that I've spent money on my car in the past 3 months. That was easy

wow that is an easy out....especially since you did a supercharger install. I know that helped your emissions ......if i didn't pass I know all i had to do was borrow a stock mid pipe and get it retested. But I'm so happy it passed. Now I can get some CA plates. taking the PA plates off will elmininate one target for the cops. Now about that red paint and loud exhaust, hmmm

Re: Major relief

Did they do Federal because of recent laws passed making all states confirm to one standard for emission testing? I wasn't sure if that was in effect yet.

no, you cant. Removal of factory installed smog equipment is ILLEGAL no matter where you live, just some areas are more lenient than others. I dont recall what the punishment is, whether its a Federal Offense or whatnot, but it is a hefty fine and its per-cat removed. I keep hearing the $4,000 number thrown around here, so on a Mustang GT, you slap on a catless mid and you are looking at a $16,000 fine. The only way a shop can lawfully replace them is if the converters are deemed to be non-functioning, and even then they are only legally allowed to replace them with an equal functioning unit.

My buddy is a smog tech and planning on moving into the Ref territory of things when they reopen (currently all Cali Ref stations are closed)

Re: Major relief

That's why you check your garage for cops before you change it. Problem solved.

I love Indiana also open headers, anything goes. Proof if insurance, and a good VIN and your set to go with your new plates

They did federal, it says it on the print out. Technically even with a stock mid pipe, I don't think my car could pass Cali emissions. They build specific cars for Cali that have more emissions equipment on them. If you bring a car in from out of state, you're not gonna have that stuff.

I have heard $3,000 but anyway you look at it, it's a **** load of money. Technically I would have either a 6 or 8 thousand dollar fine. Yikes! And you are correct that it is a federal offense everywhere but most places are so fricken lienient. They also don't have 15 million people jammed into a small area that is shaped like a bowl and traps pollution.

Re: Major relief

im pretty sure here as long as your car sounds good with straights, (I.E. dragster) the cops would never bother you.

however, you pull out some cherry bomb, 84 chevy full size, probably a different story.
