Looking for slicks what should i do?

Ok i want to put slicks on my car. you can buy 275/40 17 slicks either on tirerack.com or discounttire.com. Or should i just go and get shinnies up front and slicks in back. if so what size do i need. how wide.

are you going to mount them on your 17" rims? if i were you, i would get on ebay and buy a set of stock 15" rims or so (less weight and easier to change. just get to the track and jack up the car and swap wheels). then put some 26x10.5x15 slicks on it. that should be more than enough to hook your GT. be sure to raise the front tire pressure to about 45psi

why bother with slicks if you're going to get 17"? get some stock v6 wheels like monkey said. since your gt is stock i wouldn't advise getting such a wide slick, but a 8.5" not a 10.5". no car under 250rwhp needs more than an 8.5".

if you are on a budget, get two aluminum spare wheels and get two real tires mounted on them. this'll be less than 100 total, or it should. and it'll knock at least a tenth or tenth and a half off from rolling resistance, launch, and weight.

edit - someone move this to the wheels/tires section

i advise 10.5 with tubes because he will mod his GT down the line. why should he have to get new slicks when he breaks the 250whp mark? see what i mean austin?

this depends on how much you want to drop on this and what you want.

are you wanting full time skinnies and biggies, or just a set of cheap rims for the track?

ok, do this. first take your time and go to local message boards and/or ebay to find a set of any aluminum 15x10 wheels. most likely you'll find some weld racing draglites for the cheapest. get a 5 lug, 5.5-6.5 backspace, 15x10 pair. mount those 10.5" slicks you want. but the slicks new, unless you can find some for cheap elsewhere. a lot of guys sell used slicks with 50% tread, but i wouldn't trust much because there's no way to tell tread on a slick! jsut feeling them and guessing.

then go toa junkyard or ebay and get two 15x3 or 15x4" spare rims made of aluminum. get cheapo 165 (mm wide) radials and mount them.

enjoy your .2-.3 second faster gt!

just to add what austin said. run the slicks as tubeless first. that means that the air in the tire keeps them mounted. you cannot run lower than 20-25psi though or they will spin on the rim. if you still are not getting enough traction, down the line, converter to tubed slicks. this puts a tube, like a bicycle tube inside. then you put screws on the wheel into the slick and lower the pressure to about 15psi or so. the screws hold the slick to the wheel so you dont spin the tire and the tube holds the air in.
