computer recommendation

hey folks, basically its about time to rebuild my main pc... getting to the point that I can't play games on it anymore and my motherboard is getting dated

I used to use anandtech for all my chipset and motherboard comparisons but now they've really kinda gotten off topic from what im used to, looks like they basically expect you to already know what chipset that you want to use in most of the comparisons, usually don't mention the chipset the motherboard is using and im just not up to date enough to know the different solutions. I've had no luck trying to find a site that still does the old AMD vs Intel and compatible chipset battle.

what do you guys use?

Re: computer recommendation

im using something 2 years old, so ill be listening in on this thread as well.

in my opinion, i feel as if processors are becoming less important and as long as you dont get something terrible, it should perform well. that being said, im using an intel core duo 2.0ghz and its been fine. its the first intel ive used... last one was a 2500+ by AMD and i used to love it for the 4 years or so of its glory days. to be honest, other than overclocking to push the last few years of life out of the 2500, there is honestly no noticable difference between AMD and intel... besides price tags.

thats my 2 cents tho... its been a while since ive been getting into the building/upgrading pc info. ill be listening in on the thread because i was thinking of building a new pc within the next year.

Yours is still somewhat competitive. It just lacks Directx 10 support.

Re: computer recommendation

oh, I'll always be an AMD fan. I my laptop with Core 2 Duo which is nice, but it seems to work to hard.I don't have or benchmarks or anything to show, but my AMD can pick up the slack that my dual core intel processor holds. AMD just runs about 100000000000000 degrees hotter. I have my desktopw ater cooled and it's still hot! but , it works awesome IMO.

Re: computer recommendation

You can't really go wrong with either AMD or Intel, so long as you get one with two or more cores. The video card(s) is much more of a bottleneck in modern games. Intel's chips are supposed to be the better performers, currently, but I have no first hand experience with them. Get at least two gigs of RAM. Get the best graphics card that you can afford. [H]ard|OCP - www.hardocp.com is where I get most of my hardware information.

Re: computer recommendation

I still use my AMD's, my desktop is OLD but still runs just fine. (Fast then, normal now) and my laptop is a HP with a AMD. It runs HOT and i wish I had my temp gun to see really how hot this gets but I have used a Mac book pro and a 24" Imac (both have the intel) but they were good at running photoshop, indesign. but they are also both a lot more money then I paid for mine.

Re: computer recommendation

My advice would be to wait until Christmas-time to begin this project. The new Intel processor/motherboard lineup (Nehalem/X58) release on November 17th, and the performance is supposed to surpass the Core 2 architecture by 50-60%. So from that release date, give things another month or two for bugs and such to get worked out, as well as allowing the market to come down in price a bit, as launch prices are always marked up with a premium

Or, if you absolutely MUST have a new pc now, get yourself a Core 2 system.

1) An E8X00 series processor ( or a Q9XX0 if you want quad core)

2) An Intel x38 or x48 motherboard from either Asus or Gigabyte
OR a 750i FTW or 780i FTW motherboard from eVGA or XFX

3) Get yourself an Nvidia GTX200 series GPU from eVGA
OR a Radeon 4870 or 4870x2(or two, if you game)

4) Get 2x2gigs of 1066mhz ddr2 ram from Corsair, Crucial, OCZ or Mushkin (2x1 won't cut it if you're gaming anymore)

5) Get a power supply in the 850W and up range from Enermax, Coolermaster, Corsair or PC P&C

6) Get a few hard drives. Use one for your OS, and others for media file storage

7) Get a nice case with good airflow, something from Coolermaster or Lian Li

8) Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. (You WILL NEED a 64 bit OS if you're running 4gigs of ram or more, including GPU ram)

Shop around for the best prices and shipping.
Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!
ZipZoomFly
Performance-PCs.com, ... sleeve it and they will come
and there are many more

Hope this was helpful. I'm actually planning my next build, but I'm waiting for Nehalem and X58

yeah just did that myself, now im looking to start building the pc after christmas, if I still have any money left by then

got my lappy from newegg, awsome buy but it has vista on it

lappy buying is easy, you don't have as many choices and durability is more of an issue than performance.
I think im sold on AMD... I just don't know what chipset im gonna throw it into.

maybe after I get this thing built I'll get back into gaming with some of you guys again.

Re: computer recommendation

Meh, of the 3 computers I've built for myself, the first was Intel based, and never had a problem with it. The second was AMD based, and it was nothing BUT problems. My computer now is Intel/Nvidia based, and I love it

Re: computer recommendation

I've built all flavors and never had a problem with any of them. I have a Dual Core AMD that runs 24/7 and has been together for 2 years now.

I've built AMD rigs for the past couple of years, and haven't had any complaints.

It's also possible that I just ended up with a lemon. But still, 1/3 isn't a good rate

Re: computer recommendation

yeah.. amd vs intel, not much difference. Mainly amd tends to be cheaper, run hotter, overclocked higher, and perform games better.

Intel runs harder, cooler, and does monotonous programs better like encoding/video editing, etc.

I've had both, I prefer amd for a gaming platform. I'd personally wait for the next OS.... to hell with vista. I run my games on XP, only have vista on my laptop since it came preloaded.

nice insite nekronos. And you're right. Vista was a fall through. Windows 7 is already in the works...

Re: computer recommendation

to hell with windows 7... im hearing talk of it being comparable to a vista service pack just as a marketing ploy to get people to adopt their money hole of an OS.

Apple - Get a Mac - Watch the TV Ads

i like mac's new commercial about vista pumping money into marketing rather than fixing vista haha.

xp or linux ftw.

Apple's growth lately has been pretty incredible, I would hardly call that "little effect"

Re: computer recommendation

although i primarily use windows (and probably will for many years to come), apple has been evolving over the last few years (maybe thanks to the ipod's sucess).

windows, it seems, has been DEvolving and making the "windows experience" worse.

they should have stuck with a powerful and practical OS rather than forcing some sort of apple-esque UI with so many bells and whistles that tears away performance.
