Fiberglass Boxing ...

Hey guys,

I'm considering doing some fiberglassing on the side. I've always enjoyed and i'm starting to get back in it. Would anyone know of anyone who may be interested in maybe wantign some fiberglassing done? Of course, it works better if i have a persons car .... but, I'll be doing my car starting this weekend. Just to show that I know what i'm doing, i'll post the work when i'm done. If it goes well enough, one of my dreams has always been to open a shop of the sort for audio/fiberglassing and such. So, if anyone has any ideas about how to market that, that'd be awesome too.

Did I post in the right thread? heh ....

Re: Fiberglass Boxing ...

Look up Speeed of Sound in Memphis....

Other than that..I got into this business. Composites more exactly, doing fiberglass and carbon fiber/kevlar parts on cars. Market isn't there except on a very very small scale. If you need some help I'm pretty good at pulling some good molds however and can take apart pretty much anything on a mustang lol.

We made side scoops, hood scoops, interior pieces, and started on a 1 off body kit before closing down. The only thing that kept us open was gov contracts and some big contractors work we were doing making structural dome molds out of fiberglass.

Re: Fiberglass Boxing ...

i'd figure the market would be pretty good there? there is no competition here in marion ... the only problem is, usually ... to be successful, you need repeat business. That's what i'm trying to figure out...

Re: Fiberglass Boxing ...

i wanted to do this too, until i got my work out there and the clientel i would be doing work for, especially the car audio crowd, wasnt exactly the people i want to work with. Not to mention with the weak economy, your market place went from small to rediculously tiny; as people are less likely to buy mods or random **** for their cars with the tight pocketbooks everyone has nowadays.

I did two entire rear seat enclosures to my 97 Eclipse Spyder. Learned fiberglass is the easy part; its the body filling and sanding that really tests you. If i got another spyder, id do a 3rd in a heartbeat, especially since i have way better tools/skills now than 5 years ago when i first did them. I think id actually attempt a tonneau cover for the back seats.

Re: Fiberglass Boxing ...

well the thing going right now in custom vehicles is luxury, not flashy, so people are starting to have thier interiors and boxes done in leather, suede or some ugly azz ostrich junk

Just wait a few years until fiberglassing becomes "retro" stylish

Re: Fiberglass Boxing ...

the shops that make it around her are ones that do everything, when the fad turned to luxury, they started doing leather work...ive built full fiberglass interiors for show trucks and have seen them taken outand wraped in leather, some of them having leather glued to a $5000 interior paintjob.

Re: Fiberglass Boxing ...

i dunno, id rather have leather wrapped pieces that match the stock seat fabric/leather, just looks cleaner IMO, like it came that way. Paint belongs on the outside, not the interior.

that being said, of all the fiberglass boxes i made, i think my vinyl wrapped one looks the best looking back on it. Painting it all black was too much, and then the revised one was all crazy looking.

Re: Fiberglass Boxing ...

it tends to get that way, for sure. and if i where putting a box in the cab, it's be designed to look stock. but im going to throw it in the back. i really don't even want it to thump. I like the sound of my car better, but I figured it'd be a plus for shows.
