PC or Xbox360?

Out of interest for Fallout3, I am stuck in deciding whether I should front the money and build a new PC or just buy an Xbox360.

I was thinking about something along the lines of...

HIS 4850 512mb - Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H485QS512P Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported IceQ4 Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Intel Q6600 - Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

4GB DDR2 ram

Add in a case, power supply, mobo, etc and I'm thinking it will be around 800 after shipping. I'm also out of the hardware loop, so if anyone knows more about the industry (better parts, new items might drop current prices, etc) let me know.

Alternatively, I could either buy a new Xbox360 and games for half that price, OR my friend has an old, broken Xbox360 (RRoD and is missing a hard drive and wires) that he can fix (he fixes them all the time).

One last note is that I currently do not have a (working) computer other than my 2 laptops, so an investment in a desktop might be nice, however, I have been trying to save some money - so if I spend a lot of money I might have buyer's remorse from blowing my savings.

PC. I can't imagine playing Fallout 3 on a console. I'd look at a 9800GT or a lower end GTX2xx if you can afford that. More future proof.

Re: PC or Xbox360?

Just from browsing around a bit, is this true?

GTX2xx > 4850 > 9800?

I think the GTX2xx is a bit out of my price range. I would love to lay down a few extra hundred dollars, but every dollar spent is an increasing expectations for an Xmas present from my girlfriend haha.

Is there any reason you recommend a 9800 over a 4850?

Re: PC or Xbox360?

The 9800GT is a bit cheaper than the 4850. It also depends on what resolution you plan to play at. I run at 1920x1200 so my one 8800GT is pushed to the limits. If I was only on 1440x900 or something like that it wouldn't have a problem.

Re: PC or Xbox360?

I honestly don't even know what resolution I would play on - it's been a long time since I had a PC that could handle anything intense. My x1600 was handling many games fine over the last few years, but I would have to down a lot of settings to Medium/Low to get it to run silky smooth.

I think around the 200 mark would be ideal for a video card. I'm leaning towards the 4850, but the GTX260 is somewhat appealing. I'm just trying to find if the extra money is truly worth it... or if the 4850 is more bang for the buck.

Re: PC or Xbox360?

well, one thing i was considering with the 4850 is that in a year or two, i could slap in a second one and crossfire it. save costs now, and exceed power later.

Re: PC or Xbox360?

Problem is that scaling is less then 50%... so it's not that drastic to help.... and in two years who knows if two video cards will work better or worse than now.

would this work with my current setup? like with the mobo and everything?

this is what i had before...

4850
Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H485QS512P Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported IceQ4 Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

case
Newegg.com - Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases

mobo
Newegg.com - ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

processor
Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

ram
Newegg.com - mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

dvdr
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 22X DVD-R 16X DVD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe - CD / DVD Burners

hd
Newegg.com - Seagate ST3640323AS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives

couldnt decide on whether i should get a heatsink+artic silver too.. or just use the stock stuff.

cart is getting more and more expensive its quickly approaching the 1k mark. might be going with the 4850 afterall... and might have to ditch the (legit) copy of vista.

Re: PC or Xbox360?

sorry guys, changed my mind.

gonna go get an xbox 360 + fallout3 this afternoon.

gonna do the pc later... maybe next year. there just isnt enough incentive in games that arent available for pc that my current laptop cant run and arent on a console.
