Need help with a Chevy.

The car I want to drive is an '82 Chevy Chevette. 4 banger. Carb. Rear wheel drive. I'll start with the cheap problems and then get to the more expensive ones.

1.) My dad went and had a new exhaust system put on it. Well, the guy did something really illegal and cut the converter off of it and put a pipe in place of it. So, how much so I expect to pay for a new converter?

2.) The car sat for 10 years. So the next problem could be one of two things. It could be either a rusted clutch to the flywheel or a f*cked tranny. My friend decieded to slam gears in it and I don't the the nylon bushings held on.

3.) This is the tricky one. The carb has already been rebuilt on it. But it didn't solve the problem. So we went to get a new computer for it. My dad isn't in any hurry to put it in, I however, am. So, it's either the computer or the carb. How should I go about reconnecting the computer?

The rest of it is all appearance. It needs a new paint job (Hello Macco.) and the front windshield needs to be replaced. It is leaking into the floorboard and has ruined the dashboard and carpet. No big problem. The seats need to be reupholstered, seat covers will do. Braked seem to work. It needs new tires. I think they are 12"/13" rims. So that will be cheap.

They bought the car brand new so there is not reason to get rid of it. So any suggestions would help.

1. The 82 Carb Chevette shold not have a Computer
2. New catalytic converter $50
3. If the car set for years the pressure plate and cluth disc counld have rusted together. Without knowing more of the problem it is hard to tell
4. If it has sat for a while the windshield might not be the only source of water inside the car. The heater coil could also have rusted out and be leaking on the carpet. Typically the windshields dont just leak unless there is corrosion on the windshield pillars and water is getting around the windshield.

Really the Chevy Chevette is the closest thing to a disposable car. They were built cheap back when American car companies built big cars and cheap cars.

I say dump the chevette and get a early 90's car for a cheap get around car.

Corey, it does have a computer. It says on the invoice "Computer Command Control." I have both of them setting on the bench in the shop.

There is a trail from the corner of the window going down the dashboard.

The computer is a minimal controling device. Does it have cruise control ??? What is exactly wrong you have not really said. Does the car not want to start. Back in 82 when they put cross fire injection on camaros the computer were terrible and brand nw cars left people stranded when the temp dropped below freezing. The computer would just shut down.
As far as the window leaking the car has probably rusted around the window and is leaking.

I will still say dump the car it is not worth spending money on the car you will never see any return on and you will be constantly fixing

I'm not sure if that was a joke or not. But it made me laugh really hard. And I'm at work so it was kind of embarassing.

I can't dump it. The Tempo is giving out. It has about another year left in it. After the Tempo, there is nothing else but the Chevette.

Already have $100 in the new computer. The Chevette has 80k miles on it.

The only thing that it needs is either the new computer or new carb...majorly. If its the carb, it's no problem. The race the Chevettes across town so I can go get one cheap.

If it's just the clutch, it's just the clutch. The only big problem would be the tranny.

It costs more to insure it than to pay the car note!

Corey, I know how to fix it.

1.) New Carb.
2.) New Computer. [Check]

It doesn't run right. They who ran the code said it was one of the two.

When we tried to start it and it was lunging forward with the clutch down...we agreed it was safe to say it was the clutch.

I think the tags ran out in Aug 95.

I saw in a place where mold gathers on cars.

I think he is saying he still owes money on the mustang and it would cost 2400 dollars a year to insure the mustang..... and that he could put that 2400 dollars a year into paying off the stang

The Mustang is not paid for. Still owe $7k on it. Why should I pay that much on a car when it gets paid off, it will be $500 every six months. It's stupid.

Corey, the only think I've bought for my car that wasn't Christmas Money or Birthday money was a $40 ebrake handle.

I'm trying to plan ahead so when the engine in the Tempo finnaly gives out, I'll have another car. A couple hundred dollars just to get the Chevette running seems alot cheaper than the couple of grand the Tempo will need when either the tranny or engine gives out. The tranny has $3k invested in it and it's still not fixed. And it's leaking more and more oil in between changes.

My dad doesn't have the spare money because he has to pay insurance on the Mustang so the bank won't add insurance on it. He's trying to save to put tires on his truck.
