Fired for eating meat?

I heard on the radio this morning that a woman in Orlanda was recently fired from her job because she ate pork or meat in the company cafeteria.

Apparently she happens to be Catholic and was employed by a company that was predominately Muslim. She had reportedly been warned about her meat consumption before, once she was told she couldn't eat pizza with sausage on it.

So she brought in a BLT and was fired. I can understand her company would see her actions as insubordination. But Jesus Christ! They fired her for what she ate on her break. When she wasn't at work. She ate in the company cafeteria, ok, but she brought her own food and I don't think she should have been fired.

I haven't seen a news article on this yet, but when I do I'll post it up or somebody else can. I expect to find it in the "Out There" section on foxnews.com...

since we don't have enough of that...

I'd say this is a legitimate reason for one though.

where is the Anti-Christian Liberal Union? Don't expect to hear from them...

I heard that this morning on the radio also. that's just freaking stupid .here in florida they can fire u and give u no reason and there is no legal action u can take. The only reason u can sue is if u are fired due to discrimination.

I could consider that discrimination. At least it is reverse discrimination, which imho, is the same as discrimination.

Alabama has laws concerning how you can be fired.

Yeah i would feel discriminated against also. but they can say it is not based on religion and that it is just company policy to not eat pork. At my old job it was against company policy to eat popcorn 'caus people kept on burning it ion the microwave and setting off the alarms. it was grounds for dismissal. But I guess she could argue that the policy was based on religious grounds and claim it to be discriminatory.

Edit: my wife got fired once for applying for a position within the same company but in another dep. her boss got mad that she wanted to transfer to another dep and fired her. I called the dep of labor and was told there was nothing I could do.

I think it is just one of the stupidest reasons to fire someone. If that was the only reason. Who knows, there may have been other factors involved, and I don't know since I haven't seen a news link to it.

Forgot to say specifically in the first post that they said they didn't want her eating meat/pork because it might offend the other workers... wtf do they do when they go outside when they aren't at work? This is gonna be like that Christmas episode of South Park a while back...

I got in trouble once at work for speaking spanish with a coworker, they told us it "offended" other coworkers. I was so pissed!! I still speak spanish with my coworker. ....I have not seen any news coverage of this either, I just heard it on the radio

I personally think it is rude to speak in Spanish or any other language when you are around people whom you know do not speak the language and cannot understand you. Now, I do not believe anybody should be fired, or even reprimanded, for something like that. I would think that it should be brought to your, or whoever's attention, that some people were uncomfortable with it, and that should have been the end of it. If you continue to speak in different languages, then too bad for them. If you stopped, which would be the considerate thing to do, then everybody could be happy. But, my opinion, that is all.

yes. but not when I am sitting in the break room/ cafeteria having a private conversation. If they weren't trying to ease drop , they would even know what language I was speaking.

ahh, well that makes a big difference. I would have been just as pissed as you in that case.

Seems like everybody thinks somebody else is talking about them if they can't understand them.
