Try a week before...
That year school started later than normal for me (my freshman year) and me and my bro decided to go to the WTC to go up to the top before school starts. I mean we've lived 20 minutes from the city all our lives, but we've never been to the top so we figured why not. It was an amazing view; you could seriously see all the way out into the atlantic and trace the shoreline.
When 9/11 happened, I was in my 2nd period class in the library getting our student IDs. They had the TV on from the first hit and because we were all watching, we actually saw the 2nd plane come out of nowhere and nail the building. My dad was working on the Jersey shoreline near the Ferry docks (if any of you have been down there, you can see how new everything looks) on some of the new electrical boxes for the "light-rail" trains. He got pictures of it all happening.
Since you're going to NYC, I urge you to check out the ESPN Zone as well as some of the other restaurants. Even a climb to the top of the Empire State building would be worth it (I can't remember if they still let you go up since 9/11, but you could try). Have fun on your trip!
