Political issue: Marriage

I thought this up, posted it on my Facebook page, thought I'd put it here too...

Marriage began hundreds of years ago as a religious institution, a Covenant with couple's God. (denomination non-withstanding) Now, since our government wants to have it's fingers in everybody's pockets, it has co-opted Marriage as a legal institution. Government declares who can get married, and so now everyone is pissed off. Here is my solution:

Strip all legalese from Marriage. Return it to the purview of Religion. If you're able to find a church in your denomination that will consecrate your union, then go for it. Let government keep its fingers out of our affairs. For legitimate legal purposes, such as taxes and census taking, stick EVERYONE under the Civil Union banner. Straight, gay, bi, mono, poly, theists, athiests; let everyone fall under the same rules, and leave Marriage to Religion. Let Civil Union cover everything in the legal arena.

There, now everyone is happy. Next up: Taxes

Re: Political issue: Marriage

Religious right will never go along with it. They want religion in the government, so taking it out will just make them more angry. They don't like gay people either, so giving them rights is obviously a no no.

Re: Political issue: Marriage

Isn't the dowry paid by the groom's family to the bride's family because the groom is taking away a cheap labor source?

Re: Political issue: Marriage

I might be missing a joke or something but no, dowry is paid to the groom from the bride's family.

also lol from wikipedia: One of the basic functions of a dowry has been to serve as a form of protection for the wife against the very real possibility of ill treatment by her husband and his family.[citation needed] In other words, the dowry provides an incentive to the husband not to harm the wife.

Its where we get the tradition of the bride's family paying for the wedding.

Re: Political issue: Marriage

there is a reason the government is all up in marriage. If your wife died you would have no rights to her crap without the legal side... or if you went to the hospital since you are not under legal contract (power of attourney) then you might not could even see her etc etc.

I think the term and the meaning of "marriage" should be left to the church as that is what its formed from. The legal side should be something that you also choose to do if you want that part of it. Its pretty easy to draw up, just a legal way to connect you and your assets for your own well being and future security.

Thus keep it separate, the religious side and the legal side, you chould choose to be married without doing the legal stuff or visa versa~

this would stop the debate, if you cant get "married" its not the governments business its your religions business.

That is what he was saying in his first post. Marriage should be left to religion and Civil Unions should handle the legal side of it and it should not be left to just heterosexual couples.

It wouldn't stop the debate though, because you will still have the religious right upset that gays will get rights and that you are taking god out of America.

Re: Political issue: Marriage

Marriage is defined as a civil contract between two people who meet the legal requirements for getting married established by the state That being said we move on to the concept of solemnization of the marriage which literally refers to the ceremony involved. It is not enough to simply marry within the geographical limits of a state; there must be some ceremony involved. Generally speaking there is no universal form required for solemnization of the marriage, unless set by statute, but the parties shall declare, in the presence of the person solemnizing the marriage and necessary witnesses that they take each other as husband and wife.

No Rob it's not sodomizing
