Gen. Tommy Franks got promises from the French and Germans that as soon as they heard the President announce Mission Accomplished that they would provide troops.... Gen. Tommy Franks acted on this told President Bush, President Bush made the famous speech and France and Germany screwed us over.

The biggest problem with the draft when they had it before was there were too many loopholes and ways to get out of it. This made it very unfair. If you had money to go to school, you could just keep on going to college and keep a student deferment indefinitely, then there were the conscientious objectors (religious fanatics mostly), and the hippies etc who just cut and ran to Canada when they were called to serve. Me, I just volunteered for the Air Force, a fairly safe alternative, and I had always planned to go in there anyhow.

well, you cant tell me that its a SMART decision to pull college students outta school.

im sorry, but that is THE DUMBEST thing ive ever heard.

college kids are what builds americas future. college kids ARE the future. wouldnt be very useful to have a bunch of troops and no military intelligence, would it? you need your engineers to make weapons and ****, and you need your doctors to fix your crooked *** leg when you get shot, etc etc etc...

Sorry redrum, college isn't all you think it is.

I have worked with lots of fresh graduates over the years and most of them needed a guide dog to find thier ***. Education is useless without experience and there is nothing more dangerous than a brand new officer. That is why a good officer will listen to his experienced NCO's.

My current job involves me working with lots of engineers. Most of the fresh meat think they know it all and it pleases me to know end to show them they are wrong, oh so wrong. Once they learn that they still have more to learn they usually become worthwhile.

BTW, lots of officers are trained by the militaary, you know those academies we have? There job is to turn out quality officer material. Something trainable by experience.

a good portion of the military officers are trained in academies. And I'd venture to say that most of the good ones were.

Engineers are (usually) in their own little league, haha. I worked with a few over the summer.

whoa whoa whoa.. you DEFINITELY misunderstood me. NEVER did i say that college kids walk straight outta college with their degree and are instantly god. no sir. im aware that experience beats education, however... education + experience reigns supreme. most of the engineers now-a-days take several semesters on internships etc etc. maybe not the ones that go into the military, but i can assure you that me being a civil engineer, will not find a decent job without first taking a few internship semesters, which i will be doing. i mean, you cant just let a new engineer come out and build the golden gate bridge on his first job. like seriously...

what i was saying was, FOR THE FUTURE (meaning, you know, somewhere between 10-20 years from now) the kids that are in college right now, will be making a huge difference in the world. you wouldnt be sitting on your *** posting this right now (like me) if it werent from some smart college grad engineer that created all this cool internet and computer crap for your convience.

from my experience with military people (because i have ALOT of military friends) they tend to relate EVERYTHING to the military. sorry to tell ya, but ... there are people that go to college for other things that becoming an officer.

with that said. Gig 'em Aggies!

I Repeat AGAIN THE US MILITARY DOES NOT WANT THE DRAFT!!! THEY DONT NEED THE DRAFT. THIS WAS JUST A DEMOCRATE DESIGNED GAME TO GET PEOPLE TO BELIEVE THERE WAS A DRAFT SECRETLY BEING PLANNED

The Pentagon has made it clear. It does not want people serving that do not want to be there PERIOD. Enlistment is a near all time high. Especially since during Clinton years it was at a near all time low. GO FIGURE!!!!

So in a nut shell anyone who still thinks there will be a draft please leave your address where you live so BROTHER COREY CAN COME OVER AND CUT YOUR HEAD OFF!!!! Science needs more idiot brains to study and I am going to help them out BY GOD!!!!

As a retired Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, I have had my share of new 1st lts!

We used to joke that new lts are assigned to MSgts for a reason. They are like toilet paper. and we are to mold them from the enlisted perspective. Those that were smart and listened. If there was a decision to be made, I would give my advice and let the Lt give the marching orders to better his credability amongst the troops.

Then there are the Zoomies, who think they are Gods gift. Don't listen, don't ask, or even converse with the troops. Those are the ones that I let "step on their dicks"

I have had my differences with a few officer types in my times as a 1st Sergeant, Missile Operations Superintendent, etc. Most a pretty good out the gate.

As far as a draft, yes we need more boots on the ground, but retention rates are pretty good and a draft will just fill the ranks with those who do not want to be there. That causes alot of discipline problems as exibited in VietNam.

This is JMHO based on experience in the military. Before any of you have to worry, I should be. They usually call back the inactive reserves of which retirees are members of, and I have 6 more years left! I have already done my desert time, Been there, Done That, and still have the Permathine stained t-shirts!! (Permathine is a chemical used to keep dust mites away...toxic!!)

guys, they weren't trying to bring it back. the vote happened on very short notice. it's purpose was to calm people down and prove that there wouldn't be a draft.

This is "the big lie" strategy perfected by Billy.

Keep telling the same story, no matter how absurd it is, and people will eventually believe it.

So the Dems get the bill going, and they can now start saying GW is looking at the draft. Doesn't matter that he's not; they'll just keep saying it

And in a week a few people believe it because they've heard it so much

And in a few months millions believe it
