Got my steeda UDP's in today.
The shaft in the harmonic balancer appears to have some crap on it as well as the water pump pulley has a few scratches where the black coating is missing ( not sure if that would affect the belt or not )
also some grease of some sort on all the pulley centers.. is this normal or is this from a previous owner to these things?
anyways kinda pissed rite now thinking I got a previously returned item but before I call in and ***** figured id ask if this is normal

scratches and paint chips are what someone should expect when buying used vs new. If they are supposed to be new, then it was probably a Quality control oversight when they were returned from previous buyer. And that will not effect the belt as long as there is no shard edges near or on the ribs or pulley inside edge. The grease was probably used to get them off. There would be grease on the harmonic balancer or crank pulley as I call it, the crap on that pulley may be sealant as it is required so no leak occurs at the key way when pressed on. Grease was probably used as to allow ease of install and side over key way. So nothing to worry there. Just clean them up and make sure you apply sealant at the key way to avoid a leak there. I mean you can always call and have them send you new ones if you intended for new. Take some pics and forward them to the Steeda CS dept for a claim process. But honestly is it worth it as long as they work?

Sounds like they may have been previously purchased and then returned.
Have you ever bought a part, started to install it, and then, for whatever reason, decided that it wouldn't work and then returned it?
Yeah, well someone is driving around with it on their car right now!
You are just the recipient this time.
If the scratches aren't horrendous, I'd just use them and not worry about it.

This isn't a car show... We are all about performance here at ME.

haha I know just hope it wasn't defective or something or dropped its the harmonic balancer that im worried about, the inside shaft or whatever its called it looks used lol not guna lie, kinda pissed off lol everytime I order online nothing comes as expected and really just a pain in the rear to go return and wait longer for what with my luck will be a second used item in worse condition..

That is why it is best to take a few pictures, and forward them to CS with Steeda. Call them ahead of time, let them know of your concerns, adn ask for the e-mail address to send the pics as proof. Most times like with American Muscle and Steeda, they want a pic or two. Call them back in a few minutes of you sending them, then most times they will send out the replacements, and they will include a return shipping label to send the others back in the box supplied. I got to admit that AM is great at the CS Quality Control issues and get right on top of the problem without trying to cause undo stress on the customer. Brick is my go to man over at AM.

The pullies are made of CNC aluminum I would think. So rust is not a factor. Try using a carb or gunk cleaner for the grease. The silicone if that is what it is may take some patience and fingers to get off if the gunk cleaner does not assist with it.

yah its like orange crap all where the key way thing is and around the inside then the grease is ****ing everywhere lol like my hands are sticky just from touching these parts.. I am going to try and clean them up and as long as I don't notice and gouges or sharp edges I will just install them tonight.

I need a new harmonic balancer and mine looks like its about to just fall off, all wobbly!.. I have been driving the car pretty hard the past few days and I will notice if the steeda udp's make any type of difference. Hopefully I notice something but like I said it was more less I just needed the new balancer so im not crying if it doesn't feel 15hp faster ;)

Can you explain further as to where you purchased the unit? Was it from Steeda directly or did you purchase from another vendor, Ebay, etc.?

Please let me know so that I can assess the situation.

I bought them late model restoration and I am sure I could call and return them but I would rather not wait any longer, just going to install them. Everyone told me get the steeda udp's so I did and yup I get Donked.

question TJ do these things come full of grease like pre lubed or was that for sure done by the previous owner of the pulleys lol I notice the bolt used for seating the balancer comes separately packages and has a similar grease on it.
Even if they do, pretty sure that orange/black crap was a sealant.

When I got mine 2 months ago they had no grease or sealant on them and were very clean. So I'd bet its safe to say they're used. Another question did you buy these when all of Steeda's stuff was on sale here recently on late model restorations website?

#13 ·
haha yup. I'm guessing the sale was more less like a garage sale, get rid of all the returned steeda parts. Thing is, I was so impressed with there packaging, came in a big box that was full of brown paper and in the middle was a smaller box with individually wrapped and bubble wrapped pulleys. I was thinking wow AM could get schooled by LMR's shipping. Then boom used pulleys, what a donkey of a move they pulled.

and no steeda sticker :(
question, the center of the balancer is that like a bearing that spins or is that just where like a shaft goes in? do I need 2 get all that crap off and have it smooth or who cares? haha never swapped one before so no clue what im looking at until I take mine off my car.

I have always, and I mean always had best of both worlds, customer service and quality with Summit Racing. They have never left me dis-satisfied.

I dealt with Steeda directly once a couple weeks ago, and purchased a set of their headlights, used there shipping calculator and it stated based on my zip that it was free shipping. So I purchased the headlights. Went 4 days without a update of purchase or if it shipped. I ended up calling Steeda and the rep tells me after he finds my order that it was but on hold due to the shipping was not free and that I had to pay before they would ship. I told the rep that the site calculated my zip and still came back free. I told him nevermind and cancel my order. And it would of been nice if they contacted me about it instead of me waiting 4 days and having to call myself. That is poor CS if you ask me. That is why I have not been on their website since. It is a shame too, I have a large build list and I have it with American Muscle and Summit Racing now instead of Steeda. They would made a great deal of money from me if it were not for that. And I will not be buying any Steeda items from the other sites either. Even though I like some of their stuff too.

yup with AM everything I have ordered has come missing something or damaged. I have had better luck ordering from random people on ebay then from reputable sites like AM and LMR. Sure there CS is probably good, but we all only know that because our orders have been ****ed. personally I would rather never have to speak with there CS should be able to receive my order free of anything to complain about.

99_Grumpy,

I apologize for the issues that you experienced with our sales professional. Do you recall who you spoke to?

Our shipping is free, as stated on our site.

We have several new employees on the team & some of them may not have been up to speed with all the processes in place here at Steeda.

If we can get a 2nd chance ... I would love to work with you to fill your list & get you the best pricing possible.

I can assure you ... your customer service will be better this time around.

Let me know your thoughts?

Best Regards,

TJ

There is no seal only the one you make. The crank pulley or Harmonic Balancer slides right onto the shaft. Just make sure you put some RVT sealant on the slot or key hole that lines up the pulley to go onto the shaft so you don't get oil leaking. Not sure how it causes it to leak but I wasn't gonna find out when I installed it by not putting some on there and haven't had any problems yet and don't expect any problem

I say this from over a decade of experience ordering car parts. If you are buying parts and can get what you want from Jegs or Summit, get it from Jegs or Summit. AM, LRS and CJP are good for what they are but they aren't in the same league as the big boys. If you have a legit issue with a part or it gets lost in transit from either Jegs or Summit and it is their fault they'll overnight a replacement. AM/LRS/CJP would be very wise to practice this.

You are spot on with that assessment. Summit Racing has always been great with taking care of any issues, but then again, I have rarely or if any had problems with them. From ordering wheels and tires to nuts and bolts, by far the best in the business. JEGS I like too, but I hate navigating thru their website, to me its not user friendly.

#31 · (Edited)
Jegs is just as good, offers free shipping on EVERYTHING, not just $100 or more and also offers a military discount which Summit does not. But if you are not military and ordering stuff over $100 its a wash lol. I use Jegs over Summit unless Summit has something that Jegs does not.

Also both Jegs and Summit have NEVER got an order wrong for me or anyone else I know. AM and LRS... not so much. The only time I ever had an issue was FedEx's fault and when I let Summit know and they verified it was lost in transit I had the part I had ordered before 10AM the next day via Airborne Express.

TurboCobra,

If you bought new product and we sent you something used, please call our sales team and let them know about the situation. Im sorry that this happened to you, it's defiantly not something that happens normally. We keep all of our returns in a different warehouse, away from new product. We will be more than happy to pay to get those back from you, and send you out a new set. You can reach our sales team at 254-296-6500, or toll free at 1-866-507-3786. Again, sorry for the mistake.

Thanks
Jarrod

Well you are probably a little late Jarrod, TC has probably installed them already. You need to have the management at LMR have a little talk with your warehouse manager about sending out parts that have obviously been installed... For christ sake, they didn't even clean off the silicone!
A more frequent presence on this site would help you guys with these situations and put you more on par with AM.
