$630 Labor cost?!?!

I'm getting 3.73's and underdrive pulleys. So I went to the Ford dealership and asked them about doing it for me. And they told me it would cost $630 to install both parts. I say screw that, because I can buy the parts and tools and do it myself for less than their labor costs.

Is this hard to do? I know the UDP's are pretty simple(other than bolts being "torque to yield"), but what about the gears?

Bro its the dealership of course 630 is just about right for them go to a trusted mechanic if you have one i wouldn't try it myself, personally.

The stealer ship costs what it cost for a reason......If you want to try your luck then take it to Joe bunkey mechanic down the street for 350 and see what happens....It might work out, it might not haha give it a whirl bro.

Maybe he will reuse the crush washer when he is tring to set the pinion pre load among other things. See what kind of deal you can find, it might be worth it.

I'd highly recommend shopping around some...and having gears professionally installed. This coming from someone who rebuilt their own T56 and did all the engine mods in the garage...

I will also recommend getting a written warranty to cover any abnormal wear and noise. An improperly installed set of gears will cause you much more problems than you think.

I agree with how lowflyn said it, well said.

Nate, I've searched M.E. threads past and present about gears, and overwhelmingly everyone says the same thing...get it done at a place where they know what they are doing because doing it yourself (unless you are a pro at it) is more hassle than you need.

gears are not something to skimp on, taking them to a good place that knows what they are doing will save you money down the road, most places dont really know how to do it so it seems.

If it was me I would start talking to people that know what they are doing with rear ends and gears. Hopely get some free advise or help. UDP can take alot of time to install but will be alot easier than the gears. I would try that instead of paying the labor.

Yah there are writeups online for udp's you can find. However, I personally believe gears should be left to the professionals...either a certified mechanic from the dealership or a mustang specific custom shop that is reputable and has plenty of experience installing gears. Ask them about setting backlash, shimming, pinion bearings, etc. If they can give you some educated answers then you're are off to a good start. If a shop beats around the bush, I'd leave and never go back.

As said, be sure to have a written warranty made up stating that any whining or issues immediately afterward will be fixed by them.

That's my opinion...there are guys who have done it in their garage and have made extensive writeups on it...it is possible, but it is very sophisticated and takes lots of attention to detail. Let us know what you decide...we will help out as best we can :good:
