What I would do is just paint the numbers no tape. Have a damp paper towel. NOT wet just a little damp then wipe lightly over all I it. The paint will stay in the groves and the excess will wipe off. I have repainted golf clubs like that before.
You shouldn't have to. If the groves are deep enough you won't need tape. You won't have to be real clean. Just paint the numbers and wipe the extra paint off. Just lightly wipe across the top of the groves. The pain will stay in the groves and everything else should come off.

I'm not a professional shift ball painter..... But I did stay at a holiday inn express last night lol.
Well as promised I went to the hardware store got paint and get ready and I find out my numbers aren't indented on the tops most of worn away, anyways
I painted, didn't really worry about making it perfect then wiped the excess away with an old credit card, paper towel will sink into the grooves but here's what I managed to do with the stock one
