I used to have a Cavalier that the coolant would boil and dry out due to a hole somewhere in the system. The engine got hydro locked before I ever found it. Maybe it can be a similar problem? Just be careful driving it. I had no choice cuz I was a delivery guy. Lol had coolant shooting out from the cracks of my hood like it was a NOS purge.

The only advice I can give you if you think its a cracked head is start the car let it run for about three mins and cut it off. This doesnt allow the engine to get too hott to evap the coolant off the cyn if it is leaking in there. This allows the water pump to move the water around building up some pressure to see if it is leaking into the cyn. Pull the spark plug out and shine a flash light down in the spark plug hole at the same time looking down there to see if you see water on the cyn. If the cyn isnt at top dead center or you can't see it then have someone with a socket turn the crank until it comes up to where you can the cyn.

Most of the time if water is getting into the cyn you will see the evidence by just looking at the spark plug it will tell you alot.

The other way is just to pull the heads if you think its cracked and have them checked out.

The 96 is known for head gasket issues. Not because of the motor itself but because they had a very small radiator that just could t hold up to the job. If you are losing coolant and its not on the ground then you have a head gasket issue. Its not a fun job. Shop labor time is about 10hrs. You need new head gaskets and head bolts along with all the other upper motor gaskets. You will need to remove the timing chains so will have to know how to at least mark timing to put it back dead on. These are interference motors so timing has to be spot on or you will bend valves on first start. Let me know if you have any questions
