I'm looking around for a 5 lug conversion for my 65' coupe. What all is needed to convert? maybe a kit? Also will be converting them to disc brakes all around.
Exactly. I want to throw on some bullitt rims and the power I'm planning on putting down, I think 5 lug would be better. I just can't seem to find a conversion for the front axle. I plan on swapping the rear to a ford 9" with 5 lug so that shouldn't be a problem but the fronts are my problem
My research led me to 70s Granada parts for 5 lug and disk brakes before I decided to go with a full new modern front end. Im sure there is other input here from experience, mine was only research for my 66 at the time.
I also did a lot of looking at CJPONYPARTS, Mustangsunlimited and a few mustang part places I've seen on this site. You'll get a lot of good advice and direction here.
I did a five lug swag i got a 8.8 in from a 67 and got a wilwood kit and k can stop on a dime i also got a brake booster but that isnt needed i had 4 lug drums in the front and my kit bolted right on
do you think I should convert my wheels to 5 lugs? I'm running a modified 302, I have no idea what is under the hood other than it has edelbrock carb, manifold and air intake and has a 5 speed transmission pulled from a sunbeam.
Renouji's profile says Mustang II so the fronts would be easy to switch to 5 lug but I dont know about the rears. He doesn't have the options that 60's 4 lug cars have.
Any of you new Mustang II guys have any ideas? Built 9" is probably not an option!
I'm looking at these wilwood kits and they look pretty good but say they're designed for 5 lug V8 models. It looks like it just bolts up to the stock 4 lug spindle but I'm not sure. You're bolted up fine though right?
Yeah the kit i got had 2 bolt patterns on it one for the stock disks and one for the stock drum. It was a little tricky to get everything the right way but its wasnt to hard
in order to do a five lug conversion on a 65-66 mustang, you must replace the six cylinder spindles with V8 ones. the six cylinder spindles are smaller than the V8 spindles. you can use the 67-70 spindles as they are the right size and bolt in. you just then use the needed hubs, bearings, brakes, etc. all the parts are available from a variety of places. i believe master power brakes has a complete kit including the proper spindles for around $1000.
Starting up the thread again but why does everyone say convert to v8 spindles? The spindles online don't have the studs for the wheel. Are they stronger or something?
for a very long time there were no conversion kits to convert the pre 66 six cylinder spindles to five lug, and the pre 66 spindles are in fact weaker than the V8 spindles. these days the issue is less clouded as most people that want five lug wheels are going to keep the six, and are generally not high performance cars so stresses on the spindles are not as great as if you installed a V8 and lots of power.
